It was joyous to watch KDB.
It’s actually good to see Pep coaching and not coasting. He has a well drilled team that works hard now. And what is interesting is he has evolved them. I would like to see their numbers but they aren’t a high press team anymore. They’ve just solidified their back 5 more and know that once they have possession they can take their time.

It feels like we always enter the season unprepared only to see a bunch of other clubs capitalise on circumstances. In 2016 it was Leicester. Last year it was Chelsea who got into Champions League ahead of us with a rookie manager and a squad full of kids. This year things have been wide open again but we have failed to throw our hat into the ring. The squad is good enough to be in the top four, and if we had gotten things in order last summer we might have been.

This squad can’t and won’t make top 4. The way that midfield distributes the ball and defends is an incredible weakness. Whenever Xhaka looks good, it’s just a reminder of our ceiling.

I don't really get the ESR and KDB comparisons, I don't think there's much overlap in their games at all.

There's that and the fact that ESR himself has said KDB is the player he aspires to play like.

As of right now ESR lacks the passing range or technical brilliance, at least in terms of how he strikes the ball, of KDB. But maybe he's just playing within himself.

Did anywhere here watch a young KDB before his initial move to Chelsea? Has his game evolved much?

Doubt people watched Genk but KDB was already like this when he was at Wolfsburg.

I don't find them similar too. Stylistically he is probably closer to Grealish, Maddison is closer to KDB.

De Bruyne played pretty much the same way when he was at Bremen too. He had decent team mates at Wolfsburg but even in a piss poor Bremen side he looked outstanding and that was when he was 21.

ESRs movement and one touch passing are his strengths, he doesn't have anywhere near the ability on the ball or the vision of de Bruyne.

ndombele was looking a bum and now mourinho has him balling. i was hoping for the same kind of turnaround for pepe.

Yeah. I think Ndombele was injured a lot last year to be fair, but it's definitely impressive how he has turned things around. Ole seems to have gotten Pogba to perform a bit too. Maybe we just need to stick with Pepe for a while longer and hope for the best. The loss of value (if it was ever there) has already happened, so there aren't any major reasons to sell him unless he's on huge wages, but I don't recall that being the case.

yeah i don't think he's on huge wages ... over 100k but under 150k a week isn't huge wages anymore right?

It doesn't seem that way at last. I think it's pretty much the going rate for an established PL player at a big club, so maybe slightly high for someone who's on the bench most of the time, but it's not like he's going to get a raise anytime soon. Saka and Martinelli will earn more than him on their next contracts.

This is probably a guy who went from earning £30k a week to £80k a week. Most of the value of his deal went towards buying Riviera mansions for various agents and footballing executives. Not him

Yep, we paid for two of him.

I googled his wages and Meatwad was almost spot on; Pepe earns around £105K per week acording to rumours. That's not big enough to make his position in the team untenable unless he himself wants out.

Good news!!

Concussion substitutes to be introduced in Premier League from next week. No more David Luiz stumbling about in an obvious daze. Some faith restored.

he got substantially less lightweight for one.

Also got a lot calmer in Citeh. He was always brilliant though.
