I Swear.
Tells the story of John Davidson, a man who grew up in the 80s with Tourette's at a time when the condition wasn't understood, and who has spent a large part of his life campaigning to broaden awareness and improve the lives of those with Tourette Syndrome.
I watched the 2009 documentary, which remains at the same time one of the funniest and saddest things I've ever seen. The documentary doesn't shy away from the fact much of the involuntary ticks and behaviours can be massively funny, but at the same time the impact it has on them, particularly when it references back to an earlier 1989 documentary where you see the impact of the pain, confusion and isolation on teenage John, is heartbreaking. The film feels like a very faithful and well balanced take on the story.
I wasn't aware of him beforehand but Robert Aramayo is outstanding, and looks strikingly similar to a young John Davidson. The remainder of the cast are also excellent, to the extent I can even forgive Maxine Peake's dodgy Scottish accent.
