So Final Destination: Bloodlines is the best entry in the series since, maybe even including, the original. It's, and I use this word very deliberately, an absolute ripper. Brilliant death sequences (natch), funny as fuck and actual characters as opposed to the usual franchise cardboard cut outs.

Tony Todd makes his mark with his final, emotional, appearance as William Bludworth. RIP legend.

SINNERS was a lot of fun, and subtle. The mainstreamed-assimilated Irish vampires were bloody funny.

Lots of nice soundtrack highlights, and an interesting exposition of the Jim Crow legal regime too: for instance, one of the characters is a white-passing Black woman, but due to anyone with Black ancestry being legally Black in Jim Crow 1932 Mississippi and interracial cohabiting relationships being a legal felony, she is depicted as having been sent away to a place where she has been unhappily married to a white man.

The film's a bit of a weird unit overall, and the FROM DUSK TILL DAWN bit of the action didn't deliver too well for me, but it's one of the better works of critical speculative Black cinema since GET OUT. Michael B Jordan is pretty great in a dual role and the kid who plays "Preacher-Boy" can sing.

Saw Final Reckoning on Friday.

Took loooong to get going, not nearly enough tongue in cheek for a Mission Impossible film, didn't really buy the "chemistry" between Ethan and Grace (RIP Ilsa Faust, we miss you) and almost certainly the least fun I've had in the cinema this year - but the sequences under water and up in the sky really have to be seen to be believed. Wowsers..

RocktheCasbah feel like I could’ve written your review word for word. First hour was very choppy. But the last two hours were thrilling, particularly the ocean and sky stunts. Tom Cruise is the last action hero. Nobody else is giving us that kind of dedication to the action craft

Saw Karate Kid Legends last night. Not as good as the originals (how could it?) but a level above cobra Kai for me. Very cheesy, basic storyline but quite entertaining. Some good fight scenes too thrown in with a bit of nostalgia and it’s your perfect weekend popcorn movie.

BRING HER BACK is a great horror. Very sophisticated gore, but still by far one of the subtler and more sincere "horror adjacent to family violence and grief" works since HEREDITARY.

Sally Hawkins plays the most chillingly familiar homicidal Australian maniac since Daniel Henshall in SNOWTOWN, and it's a pretty packed field when you're encountering the type walking down the street.

Saw a trailer for this earlier. I worship the ground Sally Hawkins walks on, so very excited to see this. Although she's clearly streets away from Notting Hill and Mrs Brown...

Gazza M Gorgeous movie. The artistic choices are spot on throughout too. Virtually every scene leaves you contemplating all the ways a company like Pixar or Disney would have ruined this movie and made it into something lesser than it is.

F1: The Movie (what a terrible title) was as formulaic as you'd expect, but made in such a good way that it was still very good fun in IMAX.

Although I don't follow F1 at all so the names popping up mostly meant nothing to me.

Just out of 28 Years Later.

Overwhelmed, in tears, I thought it was an incredibly beautiful movie. Not a word I was expecting to use! I feel like Danny Boyle is one of those directors who you could watch five minutes of any of his films and know you're watching a Danny Boyle film - such a distinctive visual sense.

RocktheCasbah Upset I missed this in the theatre. I was gonna watch it tonight but the 2.76:1 aspect ratio is just not made for home video, it looks ridiculous. It reminded me of seeing Lawrence of Arabia on an old CRT screen and feeling like I needed a magnifying glass.

RocktheCasbah She's very good in it. Quite a smart role for her given it demonstrates her range and probably opens up other possibilities.
