Been off sick most of this week, so watched a few films I wouldn't ordinarily have got to -
One Hour Photo - jesus, Robin Williams could be creepy as fuck when he wanted to. I'm not sure the film 100% worked for me and it was difficult not to think of Manhunter, Seven and, mostly, Falling Down but I liked the premise and it was very aesthetically pleasing, albeit the film is now super dated because who the fuck bothers to get their photos printed out now? 7/10
Queen & Slim. I fucking LOVED this. Daniel Kaluuya is his usual reliably excellent self, partnered with Jodie Turner-Smith This tale of a first date which spirals waaaaaay too far, but plausibly, out of control is like a cracked mirror big screen version of Curb Your Enthusiasm, but much darker than that. I'm not gonna say much more about it, but it's a beautifully made film that put me in mind of Get Out (not just because of Kaluuya) and, to a lesser extent, BlacKkKlansman. 9/10
Melancholia. Oh wow. Has any film about the end of the world ever looked as sumptuous as this one? Kirsten Dunst really and I mean really, should have won all the awards for her performance here. My one regret is that I didn't get to see this in the cinema - I wanted to, just didn't get around to it. It would have looked amazing. 9/10
I also watched the incredibly entertaining and (to my mind) underrated X Files: Fight the Future. Gillian Anderson & David Duchovny bring their unmistakable chemistry and charisma to the big screen and, mostly, nail it. Their opening scene together is a peach and tells any new viewer exactly who these characters are. Not sure many TV shows have made the jump onto the big screen as successfully and certainly not as going concerns. 9/10 - come at me, but I really do love this movie.
