Watched CRUEL INTENTIONS for the first time in about twenty years the other night.

First observation was that it's a surprisingly straight adaptation of the 18C French novel, which gives it a weirdly formal, classic feel. Second it's a real shot out the past from an MTV generation movie tradition that doesn't quite exist any more—Ryan Philippe, Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Joshua Jackson, Selma Blair etc.

Third Selma Blair really can't act. Fourth it's pretty fun despite being a bit shit and I'm glad I re-watched it.

That's a throwback. There were a lot of movies in that era that were very straight adaptations from historical lit turned into essentially teen dramas with contemporary trappings. Many of them had that strange formal feel you describe. The adaption of Othello "O" comes to mind, as well as the Luhrmann Romeo and Juliet and Clueless, among others.

Yeah, absolutely. I was relating it back to CLUELESS, see also TEN THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU.

A Shakespeare adaptation sure feels really different from an adaptation of de Laclos, though. They have to hang a lampshade on the epistolary element. There is a weird scene in CRUEL INTENTIONS where one character is about to write an email and another character says "Emails are for nerds! You need to write … a letter."

I watched Justin Kurzel's adaptation of TRUE HISTORY OF THE KELLY GANG last night.

It's a decent Ned Kelly story. I guess you could say it plays exactly like a film adaptation of Peter Carey would. Beardless queer Ned Kelly is a thing and the Victorian Police are dressed up like Klansmen towards the end. Very, very white Australian, would have to read the book to comment on that but it feels weird.

I read the book but haven't seen the movie. My memory is a bit hazy but the police were definitely portrayed as the evil English out to destroy the Irish working class.

The movie's worth watching for you for sure. Good role for Rusty Crowe in it, and the young British bloke they have playing Kelly, George Mackay, as well as Nicholas Hoult are both good in it. The cast is generally good in fact. By "white Australian" I meant both sides of that historical conflict.

My family is an Irish one that was twenty-five years in Victoria when Kelly died at Glenrowan, I think they probably would've sympathised with the Jerilderie Letter and so on.

KING OF STATEN ISLAND‚ saw this in an actual cineplex with a friend yesterday. Good film, very humane, quite subtle for Judd Apatow. We were the only two punters across eight cinemas when we went in, God knows how they're keeping it open.

If you want a really good movie that will leave you uncomfortable throughout, watch Bombshell. The subject matter is disturbing. Forget what they are broadcasting, the men at Fox were/are scoundrels who systemically preyed on the women. As always, Charlize puts in a sterling performance. I've grown to appreciate her as possibly the best of her generation.

She definitely seems to be one of the best outright movie stars around at the moment. She can do it all. Drama, action, comedy and she can carry the film with ease. Plus she's gorgeous. Proper movie star.

I thought it was an outrage that the producers of the Mad Max sequel wanted a younger actress. As you say, she's a proper movie star. A bit of make up will make her look 25 if they're really desperate for a younger look.

Honestly, sharp film but it was a little too compact—really low key and grim befitting its subject matter. The ending came a bit unexpectedly because not a lot had actually happened.

I'd think The Assistant is probably a better look at the subject matter, although it's not as "entertaining" (in lack of a better word to describe a film about something like this).

I know some on here hate Nolan, but really looking forward to this one that's coming next week. The first big release since Corona?

Not often we get huge, non-franchise blockbusters these days and the concept looks pretty unique.

it's a prequel which is why they're looking for someone younger.

I was really looking forward to this one but I've read in several places that the film is a dud; dull and banal as hell apparently. Not sure what to make of it.

It will be interesting to see how audiences react if those accusations are true. Imagine if this is the first big film back in theatres and it ends up flopping.

Hope there is a plan for backward markets to do PPV. I’d be willing to pay the market-adjusted Disney Mulan rate for a big budget release.

I don't like Nolan's works much, and the reviews make it sound exactly like I thought it would be, only if even the average critic doesn't like it it's probably worse. It's looked like an inferior clone of INCEPTION, which I despised, since the first promotions.

Someone needs to tell the Nolans to start making adaptations of the work of writers cleverer than them.

After reading some reviews I'm not as excited as I was from the trailer, no.

But by definition, the average critic does like it.

It will probably flop no matter if it's good or bad. Some countries don't have cinemas open yet, those that do have restrictions and many don't feel safe going to the movies even with those so they'll stay at home. The studio knows this, but they can't release every big film at the same time either so at some point they have to start putting them out.

No there isn't and for a good reason. The very second a movie releases via PPV a 1080p torrent releases as well. The only reason they're not delaying this movie worldwide is because they figured if they didn't do PPV then Americans will hopefully pay to see it when it opens there later.
