While everyone was going in to watch Batman I finally went to catch No Way Home. If you can ignore the insane levels of hype and watch it without so much expectation, it’s a good, fun movie. I’m not a huge fan of the old Spider-Man movies and barely remember them but they tapped into the nostalgia quite well.
I have been a Spiderman freak all my life (as I said to Jo last night, my first heroes were Spidey and the Six Million Dollar Man - Rocky Rocastle came just a little bit later..) and I loved the first two Sam Raimi films, particularly the second one. However, I think Tom Holland, pesky little Spurs fan that he is, is the Peter Parker I always carried in my head as a kid.
The first film was an unexpected delight, the second one wasn't quite as good in my opinion but still good - I really loved this new film. I thought it was half hour too long and could have lived without the half hour Dr Strange interlude (I've no interest in the larger MCU), although visually it was stunning. But the final act pay off, and the ideas behind it, I thought was genius and, importantly, so emotionally resonant. Interestingly, much as I did love it, the idea that it was too long did stay with me a bit whereas my mate Mikey, not so emotionally invested in Spidey as I am, had no such reservations.
Definitely more of a hit than Raimi's third film anyway!
