Watched Escape Room 2 today. Terrible film. Just more of the same of the first one.

Given how good PIG is, it's kinda hilarious the other film he's got out this year is this:

😆 I actually had some small hope that this would be watchable based solely on some people on Reddit saying thst the director had made some good movies and that the other poster looked much better than that one. Apparently it's trash though, unsurprisingly.

I'm programming this at the local cinema, it's quite lovely. Shot in the Outer Hebrides and had a UK release six months ago. A meditative documentary about the lore of traditional fishing culture that's the first feature entirely in Scottish Gaelic.

I wouldn't bother regardless. Spectre is a bizarrely bad film that is basically a climax in reverse. Start with a big boom, trudge through some build-up and end with nothing except questions.

Having to go to a cinema with an IMAX screen rather than my standard go to options. One of them does have an IMAX screen but they only screen movies on it at times where traffic is unbearable.

I thought No Time to Die was shit.

No fault of the actors but the story made little sense.

Oh, right. To be honest, it's impossible for anyone to tell you unless they've been to your standard go to options. IMAX is great, but it's also a trademark that can't be used if a theatre uses different technology of similar quality. There are non-IMAX cinemas with a great amosphere in terms of picture and audio and there are non-IMAX cinemas without that. I've not been to many IMAX cinemas but I imagine that they're quite similar in terms of things like that.

In other words, it may be worth it depending on how good your other options are. You should try once and then have your answer. I only typically bother with IMAX for blockbusters though, I don't get that much added value from watching "smaller" movies there.

Yeah I was thinking of it when I go to watch Dune as that felt like a good movie to try it on but I think I'll just go for VueExtreme which is probably a good compromise, convenient and 1/4 of the price.

Nice one Coombs, be interested to hear what you think. It's a low key, dreamy sort of affair, not about the heavy hits, but it's pretty amazing hearing the Barra islanders.

Likewise, Burns, thank you. We’d actually hoped to go there this year but time has got away from us and we don’t fancy a November/December break there. Or more specifically, I don’t think my heart could take the ferry ride there in rough weather!

😆 Tam, half the film's about ancient and contemporary tales of marine disaster so I definitely wouldn't recommend a viewing followed by a hellish sea passage!

Saw No Time to Die last night. Really enjoyed it. First hour was maybe a bit slow to get going but really good after that. Did see Spectre but when it was in the cinema so read a quick recap of it before going and that was enough to jog the memory, but agree it wasn't majorly essential to have seen it.

Caught Dune today. Three main takeaways from the experience.

The film feels like a homage or extended trailer for the book, so shallow in comparison. Part of the problem is the book doesn't have a lot of filler, virtually every chapter is significant so trying to condense it into a film just doesn't translate. Really unsatisfying watching some great chapters condensed into about 15 seconds. Would be much better suited to being a series.

Visually it's great and by in large I think they captured the world pretty well. The one exception being their portrayal of The Baron, one aspect about his character in particular that they seemed to invent. Their portrayal of Kynes was also pretty bad. Paul and Jessica were good though.

Overall I give it a 5/10. I probably would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't just read the book.

Lastly I hate people, especially young people. Nothing kills the mood more than people giggling, gossiping and snacking as someone gets killed. Last time I ever go during peak time to a popular theatre.

Ha, yes this really bugs me too. I am less and less tolerant in cinemas these days and have just about perfected my mother's glare.

They say wealth buys you distance from friction. A mate has hired a small cinema this weekend and about 20 of us are going to watch the 2 Blade Runner films with a short lunch break in between. If anyone annoys me it will be someone I know!

I had the exact opposite experience during Dune. Some boomer was sat behind me and the twat kept explaining everything that had just happened on the screen out loud to his wife or girlfriend 😆

I was thinking the same thing - never, ever go to the cinema again on the weekend when these people are out and about.
