solid no to Grealish. all our cash will be poured into this guy. we needed to strike earlier. that should be the trick for us. there are so many guys who might be on the cusp of greatness and not sitting in some top 8 Premier League club. this is where Edu needs to do the hard work and scout. buying Grealish is laziness.

Grealish looks good but he's English so hard pass. You know what English players do they're expensive and burn out early. Then be caught by the Sun shagging transexual bookies by the time he's 28.

Grealish would be outstanding. With Tierney behind and Shaka on the right? He would be unplayable, but unfortunately we have too many holes that need filling.

I was banging on about Soumare last year, and will do so again. Fantastic potential, extremely mobile, he and Partey would give us the sort of legs we had back with Vieira/Petit then Gilberto.

Never seen this Tchouameni, but if he is good technically, plus mobile, bring him in.

We still need a right back, we need another attacking midfielder, plus depending on who leaves, maybe a CB and Striker

Soumare is the more complete midfielder - he is at the top end of all midfielders when it comes to being able to run with the ball. He is also a really good pogressive passer. He has the same skill as Partey in being able to send out those long sweeping balls to both wide forwards. He's good but not great defensively, mainly being able to read passes like Partey.

Tchouameni is a defensive beast who is capable going forward. He has good passing and has range, but does not attempt nearly as much, nor carry as long. He's more likely to retrieve the ball and then redistribute it short. Where he truly excels is all things D. He is fantastic in the air, reads passes well and intercepts, and is an excellent tackler.

Just depends on the balance we want. Tchouameni feels like Bissouma with a bit more ball ability. Soumare is true B2B but not a defensive beast.

Thanks for the write up on Tchouameni.

In that case, I would probably be more partial to Tchouameni.

As we could also rest Partey and go with a more attacking midfield with Tchouameni anchoring the midfield.

If we got any of Soumare, Tchouameni, or Bissouma, we would be in much better shape going forward.

Pleasure. I’m partial to the French boys (Tchouameni and Soumare) just because I don’t want too many mids in Africa at the same time. If we kept Elneny and bought Bissouma, both them and Partey would go to Afcon together

I wonder if we are looking at keeping Xhaka whilst Azeez develops?

I think Azeez is still a full season from getting Elneny’s minutes. Elneny has played more minutes than Partey this season. It’s an important role for someone who can do a job. Azeez has either been injured or riding the bench this season

Much will also depend on what shape we look to play and the roles within it.

Makes sense to recruit from nations that have a lot of depth so long as they are fit for purpose in terms of capability and quality.
It makes Edouard a good call to replace Laca as well.

Question - should our recruiting strategy/targets change IF we regain UCL for next season?

By this I mean in terms of both player experience and/or financial spend, as I do not think player quality and being fit for purpose would/should change regardless of if we regain UCL or not.

IMO it will still be a buyer's market in the next summer window, and further to this we know that major clubs across the European leagues are in deep financial trouble and will need to sell.
Do we continue to go for the fringe/break-out player/s who may be unproven or lacking experience at UCL level (such as the Ceballos/MO/Pepe/Gabriel), or do we look to rebuild the starting XI based upon players who are proven at that level, even if it means the likes of Saka & ESR lose playing time?
If we are to rebuild based upon UCL do we also then look to sell any player who is not a 'natural' fit for Arteta's preferred system, even if that then includes the likes of PEA, Laca, Pepe & Xhaka if their replacements are proven at a similar level?

The main issue is whether or he's good enough, and I'd having thought about it I'd have serious reservations about investing so much to someone in a position he's rarely played in a new league just as he's passing his peak and entering his 30s. This is essentially how we work in the transfer market, along with also converting transfer fees usually paid in cash to increased annual repayments over the term of the initial player contract.

Because of the way we structure our finances we don't have a lot of cash available to play with up front in the transfer markets. Rather our transfer budget is more about the combined impacts of transfers and wages to our projected operating costs = the more you spend on transfer fees the less you can spend on wages, and visa versa.

It's one means of extending your market activity if your revenues have sufficient capability to absorb on increase of a combined annual increase of 50m or so if you do not have the cash to pay 100m up front. However as seen post COVID it can expose you if those revenues used to service those increased operating costs then disappear for any period of time.

This is a great question. I would enter the summer with 3 financial scenarios. 1) baseline we are out of Europe and low on cash. 2) in Europa League and 3) in Champions League.
To simplify life, I would make hard and fast plans for scenario 1 so I can start recruiting and selling players now before the summer. And put our feelers for the other 2 scenarios should they happen.

My goal would be to get a great starting 11 under scenario 1. And then we can do add-one under 2 and 3. But having a baseline team that can play incredible football with some swop outs as needed is where I’d start. And then bedazzle

I don’t think it should change too much.

The players we should be targeting, should be readily available for our project under Arteta, with the goal being a proper top 4 contender within a season.

The only deviation should be, if we make top 4 this year, will that open the market to certain players who we would not have a chance with under europa qualification?

Again even looking at all possible scenarios, only Grealish and Camavinga tick those boxes.

Even with Camavinga, as great as he looks, is it worth spending the same money on him, as it will be on Soumare, a right back and attacking mid? That is what we are talking about, as he would cost upwards of £70mil.

I think we are in the region of buying to have a very good squad, and the season afterwards, we should be looking at one or two “star” acquisitions, to just round off the team.

I don't think we should go expensive either, and especially not when it comes to youth players. Can't buy at both high risk and high price. The point of spending big should be to get an established top class player, but even those flop at a worrying rate.

If we get into Champions League it just shows that the squad is better than a lot of prople give it credit for, and we should trust the development of it accordingly.

I’m with you, Oh Boy. I would stop spending £70m on players. If players are priced at that level just walk away.

I was looking at Leicester’s transfer business. The club sitting in 3rd. Over the last 3 seasons they’ve brought in Maddison, Perreira’s, Soyoncu, Perez, Praet, Fofana, Castagne. All these players were £15-30m. Only Tielemans was more at a weird £40m. But I think that’s the formula we should largely follow. They have a high hit rate of successful 1st team players amongst this group. As long as we have clarity on playing system, it should be easy.

If we make champions league, we can make a splash. But I wouldn’t plan for it as a baseline. It would be my on-top. As things stand we basically have 80% chance of no European football, 10% chance of Europa and 10% chance of Champions League based on prediction models and betting odds.

We largely have, Martinelli, Tierney, Leno, Gabriel, Mari, Saliba all pretty much fit into that bracket.

I wouldn't go near £70m either, I said as much when we were after Zaha and Pepe, but I also think we should be aiming higher than Leicester, simply because we can attract genuinely world class players at £40-50m odd (Partey), while we're also not buying players to make a profit. Would you say no to a Bruno Fernandes type for 50m+?

And as someone mentioned in the other thread, it's worth bearing in mind that Leicester have spent £80m odd trying to find an heir to Vardy, and they've all flopped. We can just go out and buy an Auba.
