Sometimes he plays in the double pivot with Kampl. Forsberg plays ahead of them in the 4231. He also plays in the double pivot if they line up as a 343. Other times he’s the one who goes up. He’s a versatile player. They have a lot of flexibility for how to replace him with Olmo / Haidara further back and now Szoboszlai further forward.

We could line up with him in a number of ways. He can play 10, play in the double pivot in the 4231 or play the right 8 in a 433.

Sabitzer plays CM for RBL next to Kampl with Olmo as #10, at least for this season.

EDIT - as it stands if we were to make only 1 transfer in Jan he would be my pick based upon current circumstances. I'd play him as CMA next to Partey in the 4231, but he could easily cover for ESR as CAM if we did not want to use any of our current options, whilst we could use those current options to provide cover at CM.

At a pinch IMO we have numbers/cover across any other area other than GK, which would be next on my to do list.

Sabitzer (or even someone like Laimer) would be good. We need players who can press, win back the ball and quickly transition into offense. Midfielders who play with their heads up and can find players further up the pitch immediately after winning back the ball.

Bissouma looks like a decent player, but I fear he's a bit like Ndombele. Goes missing for half the game.

Interim structure for rest of the season. In the summer, we can then get a good young striker, eg Edouard. And assess how Saliba progresses. If he’s great, he can start. If he’s on track, keep Holding. If he is a flop, then we can shop for a right CB.

Seems like a good plan to me. So the most important thing is that we should get a CM in January. Anything else is a bonus.

And I think you have enough similar cover for now. A core of Martinelli, Pépé, Xhaka, AMN, and Mari should be enough to cover most positions The main weakness is at 10 where probably Saka is most like ESR. Perhaps Nelson.

perhaps. the other positions would have to be balanced if he played in a double pivot. he's mobile and clever but not as good at breaking things up like partey

No one else in the squad has the same physical/athletic attributes or defensive intelligence in midfield as Partey.

As long as he's better at doing so than our current options (even if 'only' via interceptions/recoveries rather than tackles), Sabitzer would be an improvement, let alone his ability going forward.

Ceballos is a smart defensive player. He’s not as robust and fast as that Brighton fellow, but he works hard, gets stuck in and anticipates well.

He can also beat the press on the ball when we look to play out from defence, and he started as an AM at Betis.

Worst case scenario as long as we are able to cover ESR as CAM/#10 I think we can live with our options elsewhere.

IMO the trick to this Jan window is to be able to improve the team creativity and capability overall whiilst doing so.
For that reason it may be better to sign a starting creative/progressive CM to partner Partey and use Ceballos to cover both the CM & CAM positions, rather than to sign a CAM/Wide playmaker who would be more likely an either/or scenario.

Yes we need cover for ESR, but for mind CM remains the more immediate & long term issue.

I agree. So go for the elite option in Sabitzer. You’re right about Ceballos origins. He’s also a small spaces player who will be comfortable replicating some of those passing moves upfield when he spells ESR up there. So Ceballos and Xhaka as our 2 main options of the bench for the middle 3 positions. ESR, Sabitzer and Partey as the starters.

Elneny can be at the far end of the bench. Send Willock and Nelson on loan to the likes of Burnley.

IMO if we drop Xhaka we need to sell him - I don't think he responds well to being benched.
Nothing to base it from other than his general attitude = just a hunch.

I meant for this season. We should, of course, sell Xhaka in the summer. I think everybody is agreed he must go this summer.

If you get Sabitzer now and are able to create a market for him, why not.

I prefer not to do much business in January. The market is not liquid, so unless someone is super desperate for your player, you’re not going to discover a great price for your player.
