Maitland-Niles to leave?

Agree. I know he's got 3 years left but get him on a new deal before his profile grows.

If he gets that RB/RWB spot an then lets hope the added game time and focus can propel him to the next level. I don't have huge issues with him from a defensive standpoint even as a RB, but I do think he needs to improve a little on the ball.

Ideally one to keep but his agent is known to run down deals (Ox+Sterling)

Tad long, but really impressive and balanced display of AMN.

Couple things stand out:

1) Fair number of clips highlighting his different roles this year. In particular, how he was playing as a RB, but quickly moving into the channel (leaving the wide position for our winger) earlier this season. Thought he was great in that role as he's a confident passer and a strong runner on the ball.

2) Hadn't quite realized how good of a dribbler he is. His confidence is clear in that he trusts both his technique and his physicality to keep the ball tight to him. Seems he's one of the few players who I trust to break/resist a press.

3) AMN offers far more than Bellerin going forward. I'd imagine given equal playing time he'd double what Bellerin could produce in a season for goals/assists.

You'd want to add on 1) that he's a more versatile passer than Bellerin. He can pass in multiple directions and ranges, and with both feet. Which means he can get the ball out of the back better than Bellerin who is sometimes guilty of causing the tromboning of the ball in the backline and starving Pepe of the ball.

4) He's our best one-on-one defender. The Mané tackle is the best example of that. Nobody else on the team does that tackle so cleanly.

I think the best modern fullbacks often have attributes that make you think they could've been a midfielder. Monreal had that although he lacked outstanding physicality. He obviously had other things going for him that AMN currently doesn't have, but he could get there with stability both regarding minutes and position.

Because of his midfield training, AMN has the ability to play both the traditional fullback role and also an inverted fullback role. It's probably this versatility that is quite appealing to Arteta, even if he uses him exclusively on the right.

I know, but I imagine he would be given a primary role now, particularly if Bellerin leaves. See him becoming the top dog at RB. Cedric would probably become the nomad

Who cares if he has 3 years?

If he doesn't sign we'll either have to sell next year or scraps the year after.

While he is performing well he can't hold the club to ransom.

If we're committing to giving him games he should commit to the club or GTFO.

They are discussing an extension according to Ornstein, but on the list of things Arsenal need to be concerned about I doubt Maitland-Niles potentially leaving for free in 2023 even registers. If we were going to sell everyone who has three years or less to go and still haven't extended yet we'd have to bin the entire team.

Good. Get it done well in advance of the 2 year mark. We can’t be constantly in a state of panic over our best players. I’m all for extending him far beyond anything Cédric has.

Would personally think that if Bellerin leaves, Soares becomes first choice right back. Unless there is a big change, the current system is heavily reliant on Tierney and Maitland playing that left side of defence.

You'd hope we'd bring in another left back. It'd be asking for trouble to not have someone to rotate with Tierney and at this stage I'd rather Saka play in the attack unless theres an emergency.
