Atletico have been clear from the start the only way Partey leaves is when the RC is paid. Once we get Torreira out for 20m+, that plus Martinez should get us Partey. We just need to make sure we put in an obligation to buy on Torreira.

Quite confident about this now.

Ray, the only problem with the release clause is it’s a payment from Partey to Atletico. As it’s structured, they are due €50m in a lump sum. We need to get a lot of deals done that that will generate €50m cash in hand now. With Aouar I’m sure we could do a deal where we only have to put _£20m down now. Atletico are in a great position. If I was them I wouldn’t accept anything less than a €40m cash up front deal if the player wants out.

I don't think cash will be a huge issue. The bigger concern will be balancing the books and long term running costs and that means trimming the squad. If after all that the Kroenke's need to make up and £30-40m short fall in cash in the short term I'd like to think it would be available.

I don't think cash flow is a problem for us, especially after Kroenke restructured some of our debt, and consequently our obligations to have cash reserves readily available.
It seems to be other reasons holding this deal back such as the number of non-homegrown players, and working to a reduced self sustainable budget.

That loan deal gives us £10-20m breathing room. We still have to deal with a loss of up to £100m in seat revenue, and some lost commercial money from China and other TV deal issues. Then we still struggling to offload players from what was the 4th biggest wage bill last year. I think £50m would be quite hard to cover.

I really don't think we will sign him. 50m up front is just too much and will limit our future deals

City have come out through their media mouthpieces and say while the player is of interest they have not bid for him. Think it just Atletico throwing out bullshit in the media to make their general position look strong. They’re in a bad financial way, lost €100m due to COVID and saw recently there is even talk they have asked or will ask players and staff to take a second pay cut.

However they also know the clause for Partey is low in comparison to their big stars so they will try and hold firm as long as they can.

I don't get the feeling we'll land him either for several reasons. I was thinking about all our record acquisitions north of 40 million GBP. Would consider Aubamayeng and Ozil worth it, not Lacazette, Xhaka an absolute disaster and a decent slack of blind faith with Pepe at the moment. Thats not a good record overall and I'm concerned about Partey and Aouar being value for that much money. I do get that going rates are now different.

My impression of Wenger vaulting a giant sum until approaching a proper star (Mbappe,Lemar,Sancho,Sterling) with conviction instead of spreading the same sum for two CL-tier players resonated with me. Maybe the impression is a bit off the mark though, and maybe its about realizing we need the raise the squad quality base rather than the ceiling.

Partey and Aouar is as good as it gets for us, spending more won't get you anyone better, and spending less will most likely get you worse, so as far as I'm concerned it's the perfect profile of player.

Don’t get why we couldn’t take out a loan with either the owners of a third party to smooth cash flow if that’s what we need.

Ok we’d pay interest charges on that but surely it’s an option
