We can agree that they are far from perfect, unfortunately amongst their imperfections is a rigid hierarchical and authoritarian party structure with unelected and largely anonymous individuals shaping policy for the Republic from Connolly House in Belfast.
I imagine our society will take a turn to a much darker place when / if they are in a position to be the majority partner in a coalition government.
I can't imagine our politics could get any darker than trying to deal with the aftermath of this pandemic with a FF and FG government along with whatever self serving stooges decide to prop them up. It'll be as bad the FG/Labour austerity government.
Well we've not had SF in power and governing here in the republic so we've all got a blank page on which we can assemble our imaginings.
As I view Mary-Lou, and her cohorts at the top of the hierarchy (both visible and behind the scenes) as first and foremost Republicans, who have strategised to carve a place for themselves in the Republic by downplaying their Republicanism and constructing a left leaning populist version of themselves, I imagine that when /if in power their main concern will be their next steps on the road to a United Ireland as opposed to focusing real energy and expertise on the issues of poverty, unemployment, addiction, abuse and mental illness that are rampant in areas not so far from me.
They don't really know how to operate on any level other than "them and us", their power comes from magnifying differences, creating tribes, they have it in them to split the Republic apart along lines we've not seen in decades.
I don't trust for one second that they will be any way specifically capable of dealing with an ongoing pandemic or the aftermath of same.
They have few new or interesting ideas, seemingly don't grasp the lightening speed at which the environment around us is changing. They're throw backs with simplistic solutions to massively complex problems (no different to most political parties).
Prior to the last election our local SF TD announced he would not stand again as he felt as the role of TD was useless in an area where the needs of his constituents would be best served by a social worker or addiction counselor.
I respected his honesty - naturally he's been replaced with a good party man who will stay right on message.
