Was clear from Arteta's press conference that he considers two players per positions:

LF: Auba/Marti
CF: Laca/Eddie.
RW: Pepe/Nelson

So as long as he insists on playing Auba left, we will not see Marti. For City, I'll assume he'll go with Laca and between Pepe/Nelson it's 50-50

Martinelli can't have come to a shock to anyone though surely, seeing as both himself and every manager he's had here classifies him as a left winger.

It's a shock that it's so rigid that you can't play Pepe and Nelson or Auba and Martinelli at the same time. If that's what he said, anyway. Haven't seen the press conference.

I think the rigid part of Arteta's phlosophy is to insist on a centreforward playing with his back toward the goal personally, especially when we have one that is world class at playing the other way.

In fairness he obviously didn't put it this way, but reading between the lines of what he said here and how he has managed the squad so far, I think it's pretty clear, at least to me

Yes, they are but with the squad balance that we have at the moment for that position on the left, we don't have five players because we are using one of them as a left back, who is not a left back, so we are just trying to adapt to the situation we have today, try to put in the team the players to have a goal threat that can be successful for the team. That second paragraph gives me a lot of hope. Put Saka on the wing and Auba upfront and I think this team will be a lot more dangerous in the attack.. hopefully Kieran will be back soon

It's a really odd statement though. If that's the issue then why don't we just play Martinelli on the left wing and Auba up front?

I think the fear is Aubameyang would end up spending 90 minutes having terrible passes fired into him by Xhaka and co., trying to do what he's not good at and as a result very little of what he is good at.

So I think Tierney or no Tierney, Aubameyang will continue wide while we have a malfunctioning midfield.

Yeah I agree. Feels like to me Arteta doesn't think Martinelli is ready to start games in general.

And he's right. Martinelli may turn out to be a great player, but he's a long way off at the moment.

I think judging from all the Arteta postgame comments that have been posted here that we might see this lineup at some point. He's admitted wanting Saka further upfield. Not sure what's up with Bellerin, and expect Tierney to surely start at some point.

I think people need to realise that it's not about AMN being behind the pecking order but him simply not being an option at right back. I mean there was a game where Sokratis was dead on his feet and could barely walk for about 20 mins, and it was only when he could no longer carry on that Arteta threw AMN on with a couple of mins to go.

His only appearance since then has come as a forward.

We all found the Cedric signing weird but I think it's pretty clear why it happened now.

It's not clear at all to me. Sure, it may be clear that Arteta doesn't want to play him there, but it's not clear why this goes to such a degree that he'd rather play injured players, Sokratis and sign Cedric before giving AMN another minute there.

If I were to guess what happened after his good performances at RB, AMN probably told Arteta he don't want to continue playing at RB even if it meant not helping the team. Arteta probably told him his chances will be limited if he only wants to play in his preferred position.

Since then Arteta rather send out a strong message.
