still yet to be convinced by eddie. he was decent for us last season, but still has it all to prove. his purple patch couldve easily been inspired by the desire for a new deal or an attractive move elsewhere. willock was also scorching for Newcastle then fell off a cliff. hopefully eddie doesn't go down that route

Willock is a good example of how as fans, I think we can overrate some of our academy boys. I was a fan of his but we cashed in at the right time.

I have never been convinced by Willock as a proper cm, positionally he always takes up some flawed position but his 3rd man running is very decent. Think Howe will do him good though.

No feelings either way about Nketiah, but not sure if it's the best idea having 2 similar strikers if we sign Jesus

How was Willock pawned off at the right moment? We just used that money to sign Lokonga who is not anywhere near Willock's level. We sold a homegrown, good lad who had a great goalscoring sense and plenty of upside in our system, and not a cent was wisely invested in anything that improved the squad. It's a textbook example of how you shouldn't do business.

Lokonga has a higher ceiling.

Anyway, the two don’t have to necessarily be compared.

Selling Willock, who let’s face it, did fuck all last season, for that kind of money was a no brainer. We often get critiqued for not selling our players for good fees but this wasnt the case with Joe.

He may be better next season who knows but still right to sell him imo.

I don't give a shit about Lokonga's theoretical ceiling.

Each summer we're getting told that money is no issue to fulfill our objectives, but everyone's so obsessed with getting a few million extra out of our homegrown talent. It does not compute for me. We were bumming around the league for months last season scoring less than a goal per game, and it ended up costing us Champions League. Surely having players who can break the deadlock with a bit of vertical movement is more important than getting an ok deal on the market when we sell them.

Firstly, I don't think Willock and Sambi are like-for-like, so bit of a red herring comparing them.

Secondly, even with buying Sambi, we are net c. £10m positive (according to Transfermarkt) so even if you're comparing the two, there is a financial benefit to the choice made.

Fair point on the homegrown element but I don't think Willock was ever going to be quite good enough/what we needed whereas I think Sambi has potential (if properly utilised) to be useful for us.

This is the correct take. People will see £25m for a non-starter and assume its great business but there were plenty of times when a midfielder who can score goals would have made the difference for us last season. Willocks would have been ideal once we moved to playing with dual 8s.

both things can be true. we sold willock at the right time, but spent the proceeds poorly

Getting rid off Willock was the right thing. Getting Sambi for that cash wasn/t.

If omitt had it's way we'd be struggling to get rid of Iwobi for 5m now.

5 goals and 2 of those were the very fortunate. The last one at the bridge was about the luckiest thing.

100k a week and 5m in sign-on for a striker who scored in less league games than Gabriel.

I have some concerns on Eddie, I don't think he's looked anywhere near good enough and the one thing we've been poor at as a club is being ruthless at moving people on.

If it's not crazy money we've put down on him and he's very much a squad player deal then maybe not terrible but I'm not convinced Arteta and edu have any real clue when it comes to building an attacking side.

At the current rate, this will be 4 of our most played players in the front outside Vieira/Jesus

How many goals does that front 4 have? (Go by the history not by some magical jump in numbers you expect)

Only player that get's his weight in goals there is Saka who reached double figures after penalties.

Jesus isn't gonna add a lot there but he's definitely an upgrade on Nketiah.

Ideally it should be Jesus and another not Jesus and a man who scored in 2, 2 and 3 league games in the last 3 seasons.

(Vieira will take a while to adapt let alone get near his Portuguese league numbers)

Can't argue against his goals to min ratio though. Only him and Auba had respectable stats for us last season
