Stories from heart break central: Family and friends of patients aren't being allowed in to the hospitals, so non covid patients who are terminal from cancers, dementia and other stuff are dying alone.
Imagine and picture someone living a full life with a spouse, kids, take care of family, and then be alone during the end of life -both for them and the families at home. Some families having to make decisions of hospice and foregoing care on behalf of pts while not being there in person.

Stricter lockdown measures starting in australia now. Only essential services staying open (supermarkets, petrol stations, pharmacies). States are deciding individually whether to close schools or not

Much better thank you. I don’t think I had it, just your regular bout of poorlyness. Headaches, bit achey, occasional bouts of coughing and runny nose which I still have. Needless to say I’m keeping myself away from others.

Yeah this is whats been getting to me mostly. I never thought the people in my life would die alone like that. The elderly in my family I can deal with them dying of this thing if it happens but dying like that, with no one there. Its insanely grim.

There seems to be two main reasons. First one is that they test more, which means that they've "diluted" the mortality statistics, whereas in the UK the deaths constitute a higher number of the known cases. It's likely not because it's deadlier to live in England than in Germany; it's just that the Germans have a smaller dark figure of infected people.

Second reason is that they apparently don't test deceased people for corona. Only patients who have been diagnosed before they expire show up in the statistics, so their mortality rate is most likely higher than officially reported.

The third reason is probably connected to them having more critical care beds per 100K citizens than anyone else in the world aside from the United States.

Also I read somewhere that if you're tested with the virus, Germany immediately just assumes your entire household has it. Not that I think it's a bad idea, everyone's having to move slightly differently based on available resources and manpower they have.

Meanwhile in England they're now just testing hospitalised cases which means you're already only testing a subset of people that are seriously infected.

It's very early on to make meaningful comparisons country to country aside from the fact that some countries are able to slow down the spread.

Yep, it's the same over here, which I think is a sensible decision. They still sample the general population to get an estimate of the spread but the absolute bulk of the testing is devoted to the hospitals. Testing is going to have to be limited by necessity anyway - you can't test the whole population - so it's not meaningful to know the exact number of infected people. The main prerogative is to prevent the virus from compromising hospitals and healthcare workers, and then to limit the spread in society by emphasizing the importance of social distancing while also having economic incentives for people to stay home and self-quarantine if they're feeling the least bit sick.

Meanwhile supermarkets are opening early to allow key workers to shop before everyone else: sounds great! Until you realise that 1000 key workers were queuing and then shopping in very close proximity at a Tescos in Greater London this morning, and that scene is being repeated all over the country, and will be day after day for the forseeable. To top it off, not one of the 1000 people could pay for a single item until 10am because of UK licensing rules: so that was 1000 key workers packed in together from 7 am until 10am.

If my brother, a policeman, hasn't caught CV19 it'll be a damn miracle. And then there's all the HCWs who will now go on to hospitals to care for the sick. Maddening.

Excellent. Sounds like the mess in South Africa where shops opened early for pensioners and didn’t replenish anything. So there was no toilet paper or any of the other stuff that selfish rich folk had decided to hoard the day before. I wonder if hoarders ever stop to think of some little old lady or mother with a 1 year old will need toilet paper or milk for the very next day. They should be locked up, the lot of them

Daily Mail absolutely gagging for police on the street. I also don't know if the gov is right but I genuinely appreciate that they are seriously considering the freedom and mental health of people before imposing a lockdown, it will make enforcing it easier.

In the UK, shops can only stay open for 6 hours on a Sunday. So, although the doors opened at 7am, in order to stay open until 4pm--which is the usual closing time for shops here on a Sunday (some shops go with 11-5, but 10-4 is much more common)--Tescos couldn't legally sell an item until 10am.

Not a care in the world.

The forecast is for sunny days all this week: the social distancing measures couldn't have come at a worse time to be honest; it was raining and miserable just last week: the majority would have been much more receptive in that scenario. Now it's a bad mix of very sunny but cold during the day--so windows will stay shut mostly--and very cold at night: 0°c. And I predict a big step-up in lockdown measures is coming early next week; parents across the country are going to react very badly. It will feel like the beautiful blue sky and shining sun are taunting them.

I'd imagine that there will be lots of relationships that are going to become very strained when couples that are used to spending 10 hours/day away from one another are spending all day, every day together.

I saw that a record number of divorces have been filed for in non-Wuhan parts of China as government buildings have begun to re-open. It'll be crazy here.

Thats the problem with cities. I was out for a walk earlier on the beach and there were a fair few out but well spaced out. Nothing like that jammed park.
