This isn't something unique to Americans. UK researchers assume that only about 50-70% of the population will comply with different suppression measures. A lot of dumb people will roam around like nothing has happened.

I think seeing misery wakes people in general.

I’ve been wondering though, how well some western countries will do relative to eastern countries. The eastern countries have experience with epidemics. In addition, culturally people are more used to dealing with central governments providing guidance and direction, and the government is also thus more in a position to direct people. I wonder if in America the lack of central government intervention in daily life, good daily freedoms, etc., will get in the way of rapid countermeasures.

Add to that some missteps by the trump government, and you have problems. But people will probably only see the Trump part of the equation. All my friends just rant about Trump all day.

The worst thing is once this is all over you just know the health sector will go back to being under funded and and under prepared even for your average seasonal flu.

Tbh, I don't think you can ever be properly prepared for pandemics like this.

Sure, after this lessons should be learned and some changes should be made and pre-cautions should be taken for the future. We haven't had anything as bad for close to 100 years and the World has changed a lot since then. Different times present different problems.

Getting one SARS veteran back for their specific knowledge is one thing, calling loads back because you don't have enough doctors is a different one. China seemed to have battled the personnel shortage by deploying doctors from less impacted regions to Hubei mostly.

Anyway even if they have I'm sure having a bunch of 70+ year olds running around that environment is the not the best idea.

No, definitely. The culture and the politics hold sway over most of the population. The American independent gunslinger mentality isn’t a myth. Most of these guys out in the country ain’t listening to nobody but their guts and Rush Limbaugh.

I think most Western countries have an anti-authoritarian streak but I just assume that the US is most mistrustful of the central gov. Even if they aren't, the ones that are usually carry guns so a gov imposed lockdown would fan the flames very quickly

I recall when Michelle Obama became First Lady, she started a campaign to improve children’s nutrition. There was a massive backlash, with the outcry spearheaded by Sarah Palin who cried that the government should stay out of people’s business. This was around the same time that food companies were trying to get schools to classify pizza as a vegetable so children could stuff themselves with more garbage at school.

Dog walkers flout Spain’s lockdown rules

A dog-walking exception to Spain’s national lockdown is reportedly being exploited as an excuse to leave home as the government battles to contain coronavirus.

Spain’s government declared a state of emergency last week, imposing a 15-day long period of restrictions on movement to stem the spread of coronavirus.

Some 47 million Spanish residents have been banned from leaving home, with a few exceptions for emergencies, going to work and essential errands.

And this is only day 2 of the lockdown, I don't think people are going to selflessly isolate for 2-3 months and there's going to be much more selfish behaviour once people realise that the majority only have mild symptoms.

The UK government's chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance is appearing at the House of Common's health committee.

He tells MPs that the UK should start to see rates of infection come down in two to three weeks.

He says it would be "a good outcome" if the number of coronavirus-related deaths in the UK can be kept to below 20,000

Partial lockdown over here in Malaysia come the morrow.

Non-essential activities are to be closed. People can still leave their homes but I'd expect a host of police out there asking why the fuck you're out and about.

In general, aside from a few political shenanigans people have received it well.
