I think seeing misery wakes people in general.
I’ve been wondering though, how well some western countries will do relative to eastern countries. The eastern countries have experience with epidemics. In addition, culturally people are more used to dealing with central governments providing guidance and direction, and the government is also thus more in a position to direct people. I wonder if in America the lack of central government intervention in daily life, good daily freedoms, etc., will get in the way of rapid countermeasures.
Add to that some missteps by the trump government, and you have problems. But people will probably only see the Trump part of the equation. All my friends just rant about Trump all day.
