South African President just declared a national emergency with the following measures:

Limited contact with persons who may be infected.

Travel ban on foreign nationals from high-risk countries such as Italy, Iran, South Korea, Spain, Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom and China as from 18 March 2020.

Cancelled visas from those countries from today and previously granted visas are now revoked.

South Africans returning from high-risk countries will be subjected to testing and self-quarantine.

Gatherings of more than 100 people are now prohibited.
*Schools will be closed from Wednesday until after the Easter weekend.

Visits to all correctional facilities cancelled for the next 30 days.

All non-essential travel for all spheres of government outside of the country is prohibited.

We further discourage all non-essential domestic travel, particularly by air, rail, taxis and bus.

Strengthened surveillance and testing at all international ports: 35 of the 53 land entry points will be closed and 2 out of the 8 sea ports.

Hopefully, kids on holiday don’t affect older uncles and nannies whole parents are working. The country demanded a face amidst all the government actions, the president has given them one. All the identified cases are quarantined arrivals from Iran, Italy etc. will be interesting to see to what extent they have affected fellow travelers and caused community spread.

Pubs are all shutting from tonight to the end of the month.

Went for a walk on a beach that was deserted last Sunday - it was super busy today - but big enough for everyone to be far away from each other.

Think I'll go to a lesser known one from now on though

Spotted floor to ceiling aisles full of toilet roll yesterday.
One supermarket even had them built up into a tower next to the Easter Egg display.
I did not buy, didn't spot anyone else doing so either

Seeing the same mostly. Went by the river with the family today with the dog, as we usually do but noticed more families together out walking. Less older people than usual. Everyone keeping a wide birth. I just hope they keep letting us go out like that away from each other.

More people will panic as the situation worsens, and more people will panic buy. Better to get enough for yourself and your family before that happens.

There's a big difference between being prepared and buying trolly fulls of toilet rolls.

Yeah we’re stocked well enough with rice, pasta and other essentials anyway. As for my parents, their cupboards could see them through a nuclear winter. They’ve been on this toilet roll fad for decades.

This will be the other big story. I don’t think corona is covered by agreements that make flu vaccines available to all countries. So rich countries would be able to hoard supplies while folks in poorer countries perish. Angela Merkel isn’t trying to hear that.

my company has officially told us to work remotely until further notice. execs spent 4 days last week arguing against it, then sent an email at 9 am on a monday telling people to go home. :john:

We are still in the office but working from home is probably coming eventually. Being told to take laptops home every night in case of a decision out of hours.

A lot of studies say that lethality of the coronavirus is around 0.3-0.6 (influenza about 0.1) (due to the massive number of infected who aren't detected). Social distancing, personal hygiene and self-quarantine if you have any symptoms is probably smart, but the other measures are way too harsh. There's no way you can shut down countries for at least 3-4 months - which is what we're talking about here.

That's genius. Morons.

I know of a small finance company in the city paying for Cabcharges for some employees to come to work so they don't have to use public transport. Those people must be making good money for their firm.

They said the same in Germany earlier this week. It's endemic - even if you don't get it this year or next year, you'll risk getting it till a cure is found.

Actually even if a cure is found, there will be a further lag till it is mass produced

Quite a bit on behalf of my parents. It hasn't hit the part of Australia where I live yet, but I feel measures have been inadequate (the regional government should declare mandatory self-isolation for people coming from other parts of Australia).

It's already on the move where they are.

Not sure why they'd keep it a secret when they seemed to announce it as their strategy a few days ago.
