It looks to me like the UK response is already adapting. So long as they're focused on saving lives and trying to prevent the NHS getting swamped that's a good thing. There are obviously 1000s of cases in the community, and more than they've previously estimated.

Australia and New Zealand have now imposed mandatory 14 day self-isolation for all international travellers, though the Australian call on that is obviously too late.

Yes focus will be on protecting the vulnerable. It makes sense to me. Hiding away will just delay the inevitable.

Far better to be sensible and follow the hygiene guidance. Reduce interaction with others to a when required basis

Couple more cases in NZ confirmed today and the first one in Wellington. A man from Australia felt unwell so went to his doctor to get tested and still decided to travel here with his result pending. Then gets the call that it's positive while in a cafe in Wellington. So now he's our problem, and potentially the other people on his flight and the cafe and wherever else he's been.

Next week we will publish our emergency bill, to give the Government the temporary powers we will need to help everyone get through this. The measures in it allow for the worst case scenario. I hope many of them won’t be needed. But we will ask Parliament for these powers in case they are.

I really hope it is not too little too late in terms of exposing the elderly and vulnerable because of inaction: I fear it is. But that is a positive statement and I'm glad to see reasonably fast adaption. I don't buy the change in messaging regards herd immunity: I think the backlash has caused them to backtrack somewhat in public; Patrick Vallance was quite frank when he first outlined their ideas about herd immunity and many other scientists working with the governement or in agreement with their approach have defended the idea of reaching herd immunity at the expense of lives: Patrick Vallance, Chris Whitty and Boris Johnson have to be more careful, but they have implied as much, and I am convinved it is the key objective for them.

South Africa has launched a very helpful Whatsapp service. Everyone is on WhatsApp all the time in South Africa, so to have a full menu with updates and tips for prevention and treatment from the department of health is very good. They’ve reported some 50’cases so far with good traceability on all. Some citizens worried that overly focused on border testing versus community spread, but the efforts seem reassuring thus far.

Take it as you will: a friend of a friend, someone that genuinely would potentially have some idea, has said that Boris is pushing for a form of lockdown and suspension of public transport in London from next Thursday, and I assume (because he didn't explicitly say) in other major cities too. And also that the supermarket industry have told the government that they are struggling badly to keep up with demand and expect by the first week of April that they won't be able to supply the food and other goods that are needed.

The problem with the panic buying is that if you don't join in then you miss out. Its self perpetuating once it starts.

Yep, I hated myself for it, but I went out to buy toilet paper yesterday (I was almost out) and when I saw how there were only two big packs left in the entire shop I took them both. I figured they'll most likely restock at some point next week but you never know. Better to have that extra pack if my parents or friends are in need. All the pasta was gone too, literally not a single maccaroni left on the shelves. Everything else seemed to be plenty in stock though. All the actual food was there in abundance. You gotta wonder just how fucking dumb people are.

The prospect of not having an adequate supply of food and/or medical supplies and not being able to buy them when you need them is not a risk I'm willing to take.

I haven't gone crazy, but I have bought tinned food to last a couple of weeks, similar amount of toilet roll and have a first-aid kit to cope with sprains, wounds, fever etc., in the event that hospitals can't help or are a no go and/or ambulances are not available.

I don't know if you have anyone that depends on your care, Shady, but once it's too late, it's too late. Maybe, at least, make sure you've got adequate medical supplies so that a realtively minor medical situation doesn't turn into somethig more serious because of you can't treat it.

Well that's a potentially darker side to this. If people miss out, do we expect they'll just shrug their shoulders and say "bad luck" while their neighbours wipe their bums to their heart's content?

I’m not joining in regardless out of principle. People will continue panick buying for a couple more weeks and eventually it’ll return to normal. I mean there’s only so much space in the cupboard for toilet roll and pasta right?

Limit was 2 packs per person. Needed one. People behind me. Took one and left.

More people will panic as the situation worsens, and more people will panic buy. Better to get enough for yourself and your family before that happens.

There's a big difference between being prepared and buying trolly fulls of toilet rolls.

368 more dead in Italy, a jump of 25% on their toll in one day. It's bloody horrible this thing.

16% of their cases have progressed to ICU too. That is very concerning.
