Even without vandalism or sabotage, fuel pipelines intermittently explode due to the effects of normal wear and tear and when they do, the heat wave alone kills people in a radius and anything nearby is absolutely levelled.
There's at least one case where activists trespassed and turned off a valve after a lot of research on whether it would be safe to do so. The operators had to disable the entire pipeline and spend a couple of days testing it for integrity before going back to full throttle.
