We’ve also been linked to Tiago in a couple of places. As good as he is, there surely is a limit to just how many older players we sign. Feels like it would be either him or Ceballos and while the former is clearly a better player I’m not sure he’d be the sensible signing.

Our midfield is really light. We need to lock in Ceballos and Partey ASAP.

Also the quicker we move Guendouzi and Torreira on the quicker we can move on our midfield targets.

There's still a lot of work ahead of us and it's all happening in midfield. There's time which is a good thing but the fact that there are so many moving parts make me less optimistic we close the summer where want with regards to the midfield.

But if the exec team can move the unwanted pieces and bring in our targets before the 12th they deserve a monumental pat on the back.

Thiago is a gamble. We already lack physicality in midfield as it is, and moving to england at 30 presents a few risks. Not to mention his wages would be high, so its basically a sunk cost. Makes more sense for him to a squad like pool thats already established rather than 3+ year project

Thiago is a world class player. Can't believe he's 29, but even so, I can't say I'd be disappointed to see him in an Arsenal shirt.

He's very injury prone though and you feel it would get exacerbated in Premier League. And that's before you even begin to ponder the likelihood of him aging out on us. We did strike gold with Arteta who arrived under similar circumstances though to be fair.

Personally I wouldn't sign any midfielder who isn't capable of starting 35 league games. Consistency is more important than how high the ceiling is at the moment. Points are being fought for by the players who show up on maych days.

True, but although Thiago is a better player than Arteta the latter was already an established Premier League player, not injury prone (if I remember correctly) and pretty cheap as well.

Yea, I by no means think it's the best deal we could make. Not by a long shot. Would still like him to play for Arsenal, though. He's a cherry-on-top kind of signing, though if it were between Ceballos on loan and signing Thiago Alcantara, I know which I'd be going for.

Arteta was plenty injury prone for Everton

I get the concern but you would be insane to turn him down as an Arsenal fan given our current situation

Clrnc, we cannot be putting £80m in two players who are 27 and 29. You do that when you are ready to win a title. We first need to build a squad and think about putting ourselves in a position to compete for several years. If we put that money in those guys we are saying we want to make Top 4 next year, and then we will make another plan thereafter. It's incremental planning without building the asset base. Signings like Tierney, Gabriel, etc., give us marked improvement while building the asset base. I think Partey is the top of the range of where I would go because he is a massive uplift and could give us 4-5 years of top performance, which might be the window we target to get up from 8 to winning some big trophies

Nah, he's good but that's a massive exaggeration.

I mean you get the idea. He is starting week in week out for Bayern and has won everything needed to win. Arteta wouldn't even make the Bayern bench. Heck, Arteta mostly looked out of depth for us in Europe even against some 2nd rate team.

Yeah. Can’t compare the two. Thiago is super quality

Arteta was great for us, much better than his reputation in general. He just stayed at Everton for too long and his profile suffered. I'm far from convinced that Thiago would be as good for us. He's been a dodgy player for basically his whole career despite playing for absolute top clubs.

Totally agree with that. Arteta is hugely underrated and honestly Thiago a bit overrated. Think the latter will be ok to good in the PL but not amazing.
