Is it partey time? I'm seeing daily chatter that he wants to come. Would be an excellent signing. It still leaves question marks about overall midfield composition with guys loke torreira and xhaka facing the axe, but its a step in the right direction

Ballack also misses that outside of France, we have stopped producing top level centre backs. The focus has been on creating multi purpose midfielders. This is no golden era of defenders. If he had been in the league 15 years ago with Rio, Sol, Terry, Carvalho etc, would we care about him? He can eat one.

I'm actually relaxed about centrebacks. Indications are we'll keep Mari, which seems sensible to me. He could end up being almost perfect for us. We might be a little short numbers-wise, but with Saliba coming in I would be willing to put faith in Chambers's recovery. I think the level he played at pre-injury was good enough for a starter, and he definitely had a gear or two left too. Just keep those three and Luiz, and get rid of everyone else, except maybe Holding who I feel could use a loan to, I dunno, Bournemouth or some similar club.

Hopefully you are right about the CB’s. Although I want another CB, one with pace, the money will be a huge factor.

Although in theory, players value should be down as well.

Mari will interesting to watch, as if he does pan out, it would be amazing for us.

I think Ballack is spot on.

Not taking away from Van Dijk, but apart from Agüero, who else is there for him to worry about? Aubameyang? Vardy? 😆

The quality has definitely taken a step back in the league compared to yesteryear.

He is overrated but it's not like those names all played their best football at the same time - that list of names spans 20 years.

Lampard wasn't a striker, and aside from Henry and Shearer the rest of those guys were pathetic half of the time. They all had one or two great seasons and then ten Heskey seasons to make up the numbers. Ballack has a point, but mentioning Adebayor in the same sentence as Titi is definitely a bigger crime than thinking van Dijk is a classy defender.

Bar Henry and Shearer Costa is probably the best striker in that list. Played for some poverty Chelsea teams, was injured half the time and still dragged them to two titles.

Ballack does have a point. There isn't as much attacking or defending talent in the league, what little talent there is is highly concentrated and all teams are massively lacking in flair. The runaway league leaders are playing like Sunderland of old on steroids, all work no play disgusting run your opponent into the ground type of play. Klopp can thank the heavens for Corona because if it weren't for this break looking at his final seasons at Dortmund his squad would be in shambles right now, muscle injuries galore back then I think he had like 60% of his team out.

There is a death of dominant strikers at the moment, but VVD would be a tough match up for anyone in that list, even henry, who tended to struggle against the likes of rio and gallas

Ferdinand is one of the best centre backs to ever play in the EPL. Van Dijk has had two great seasons at Liverpool so far

Ferdinand didn't have that many great seasons to be honest. His first 4-5 years for United were a wash. He really took off once Vidic, a better defender, came in and complemented him. I think the argument goes both ways. One could easily argue, like Gazza, that van Dijk could have had bigger status if he'd been playing in a more glorified era. I felt the same was true for Koscielny at Arsenal. Suspect only Sol Campbell would have been considered slightly ahead of him in terms of quality if Kos had played for us between, say, 2000 and 2010 instead of during our most barren decade in modern history.

And gallas? He had henrys number during his chelsea days. My point was that defenders that were close to henry in terms of pace and power gave him the most problems

According to Alexis Bernard and Goal, Arsenal have contacted Saint Etienne in regards to signing centre half Wesley Fofana, with ASSE's economic situation likely forcing them to sell

Alexis Bernard was one of the first to come out with the Pepe story last summer, add the fact that they have financial problems and we can get it him on the cheap..sounds like an Arsenal transfer to me, might be something in this. Fofana has a cool name, is 19 and 6 ft 3. France has a lot of good young defenders it seems.
I have for one have never seen him play, do we have any scouts here?

Haha. Oh now it’s a crime to think the current best defender in English football is classy now? Okay.

Anyway, I just call it as I see it when I’ve actually seen the player play. I don’t care that he plays for Liverpool, as unfortunately we aren’t at their level at this moment in time. VVD is quick, strong and smart in his defending. He wins most one on ones and you hardly ever see him dive in for a sliding tackle. That is one of the hallmarks of a great defender, and he’s still pretty young. Actually prefer his defending to a player like John Terry’s for example.

van Dijk is a better defender than Rio by a long way. Ferdinand was better on the ball. If I was picking between them it'd be no contest, VVD every time. Just look at how much better the likes of Matip looks alongside van Dijk, its night and day compared to his form before VVD joined Liverpool.
