Agreed but don't mind selling Bellerin if we get a good offer. We badly need a more dynamic attacking RB.

I would handle this in two phases. We need to work on this season, and streamline the rotation to build an identity. Then this summer we can wheel and deal

this season
Front 4: Aubameyang, Lacazette, Saka, Pépé, ESR, Odegaard, Willian, Martinelli
Middle 2: Partey, Xhaka, Elneny, Ceballos
Back 4: Tierney, Cedric, Luiz, Gabriel, Mari, Holding, Bellerin
Goalie: Leno, Ryan

That rotation of 21 leaves no space for Nelson, AMN, Nketiah and Balogun - all of whom should go on loan now.

Next season
Front 4: out: Lacazette, Nketiah, Nelson. In: striker / Odegaard.
Middle 2: out: Xhaka. In: Bissouma
Back 4: out Luiz, AMN. In: Saliba.
Use new kids as necessary from academy.

Reluctant to ship out AMN as I can see him becoming a top performer in the next two or three years. He's not at his level currently.

I'm not convinced the attitude is there I'd say toure LB Mark II. I think he'll have a better career than him as he's got unbelievable potential. But I don't think he'll ever get to his ceiling.

At some point we have to start letting players go even if they have potential. Its him or Bellerin, I don't really care either way but its obvious who Arteta trusts more.

Nelson really needs to get a new manager. He's making really bad decisions. How he thinks he is going to get ahead of the logjam of Saka, Odegaard and ESR is beyond me. He must be on designer drugs

I'm starting to believe that he is entirely aware that he won't get ahead of them and still chooses to stay. Which would be even worse. When your own manager is trying to send you out on loan twice that's not an ambiguous message.

Or maybe he looks at Smith-Rowe and thinks that all he needs is an opportunity at the right moment, who knows. I'm sure everyone right now assumes that Willian won't get a second season at Arsenal and Martinelli keeps struggling with form and injuries since he came back, which was to be expected.

If Auba goes up top there could be chances for Nelson on the left wing. It just got a whole lot easier to be included in the match-day squads with Mustafi, Willock and AMN gone. We don't have many creative options off the bench either so that's another strong argument for Arteta to include him more.

Yup, he should get into the match day squad now unless Arteta feels like including 3 centre backs on the bench.

I said so in the other thread but with just 18 months left on his deal I wonder if Nelson himself views this as a make or break season?

edit: Orny has corrected himself to say he'll actually have 2 years.

The Bell would've never made that mistake... Two years is good, then he can either make it or make us some money.

But about him having looked at ESR, didn't someone say that Arteta blocked ESR from going on loan in the summer because he wanted him here? That's a very different situation than Arteta telling Nelson twice that he should go on loan and him still staying. We also brought in Ødegaard and I think we'll see him out wide at times. Even excluding Willian (like we should), that's Pepe, Martinelli and Saka as wide players while Ødegaard will probably be both out wide and central based on whether ESR is playing or not.

Yeah. Arteta sent ESR away to specifically be a 10 at Huddersfield and then stopped him from going away again. Nelson, on the other hand, has been told he can go but he insists on staying. He’s a problem child. This kid could’ve gone to Monchengladbach somewhere and become a hipster favorite.

So I would put those players into 2 buckets.

Bucket A: not good enough - sell immediately and invest in squad rebuild. That’s AMN, Willock, Nketiah.
Bucket B: integral players - replace with significantly better fit and quality. That’s Laca, Xhaka and Bellerin.

The bucket A players are no brainers. Losing them will cause no damage to the team in the short or long term. The bucket B players require us to have lined up proper replacements. Guys like Bissouma and Hakimi. And that’s where the money raised from selling the bucket A players helps out a lot. Improve the starting 11!

I'd still keep bucket A players if HG for compliance, even if they were no better than squad filler/bench cover,
unless there was an offer made that reflected their value as HG.

Spot on. People are always looking to throw away homegrown players because they aren't 1st reamers at 21. In reality we'd be far better off having players like Nelson as back up than Willian as they fill the HG quota and allow us more leeway on the first reamers. Eventually these English players sell for good money if you hold tight too.
