Claudius plenty. individual flair and invention. saka is never scoring the lob against schmeichal for example. he's probably technically able, but doesn't have that kind of imagination. sakas passing and linkup play is nowhere near either, but pires did come up playing as a 10 so that's understandable

Claudius very little. Saka scores as much, assists more, defends more, etc and has just turned 23. Pires is one of my all time favourite players but Saka is better.

.. he coached the worst Arsenal football I have ever seen. Remember games where we just didn’t attack at all. Or we would try to press but our spacing was off so it was easy to break through the first line. Was unwatchable. I never have a sense of what if.

Claudius now that's revisionism. Emery don't really have problems in attack, is just that the attack is not varied enough. His is mostly overlap from fullbacks and score from cut backs. Kolasinac was power in his setup. His defensive setup is horrible though. We kept inviting pressures and shots even when we are leading.

The poor attack you are talking about and disjointed was under Arteta first few years. It was genuinely horrible at the start and we went so many matches and losses without much xG. There was a stat those days where when we went behind we fail to even create a shot after.

Clrnc yeah but you could at least see what Arteta was trying to do after a few months once he hit the hang of management. His team wasn’t scoring but our could tell he was building control from the back. The through line was clear.

SimplyThePest it's just a bizarre thing to bring up considering Arteta has now overseen back-to-back title tilts involving points totals comparable to anything Henry was involved in his time as an Arsenal player, not to mention our current level.

But it's not about Arteta. Henry isn't saying we should have kept Emery because he's better than Arteta. Basically just saying Emery is a good manager. It's not that deep.

This is unbelievable delivery by Saka. Also I love that we consistently do in-swingers right on top of the goalie. It creates panic and is also less likely to leave us at risk of being countered.

The only thing Pires has over Saka is that he is stylistically better which is a big deal because football first and foremost is about entertainment as much as it is about success/effectiveness. People will pay money to go and watch Pires, though, not so much Saka.

Yes they would, players over time generally get better and tactics are better than ever.

It is not always a fair comparison and teams should be looked at in the time frame they played in. Earlier this year I watched Arsenal vs Man Utd from 1997 and you watch the football on display and it looks nowhere near the quality of football these days. I think the PL on the whole has technically and tactically got a lot better than it ever was.

Don't know if that's a fair comparison since the premier league back in the '90s wasn't even one of the top 10 leagues in the world. The standard was horrific and almost amateurish compared to the best league at the time: Serie A

I watched it too a couple of weeks back. I always lamented the fact that Wenger replaced Vieira with Fabregas (as great as the latter was), but the more egregious example was replacing Gilberto with Flamini (Fab and Flam started that game). What a fucking average player who left on a free and then Wenger brought him back. This cunt partnered Fabregas and Ozil, two of the best attacking midfielders of their generation.

Pires over Saka for me. But that just means Pires over most current wingers in the world. I just prefer the magic of a bygone era over today's machines.

Invincibles over this team.

I can’t properly put this team in the same echelon until they win something major. Same goes for Saka so Pires for me.

Pires scored in big away matches like Liverpool away. Saka still has some way to go.

We are good and have brilliant defenders but we haven’t shown we can do it when it absolutely counts yet (Bayern last year, Villa at home).

TBF Saka is the star of this team. Henry was the star of that team and players like Bergkamp and Vieira were big stars too. Its not a like for like in that regard.

Agree the current team can't be considered better than the Invincibles until they've won a few things. Win a league and CL and then we are having a real discussion about this.

The current players who would start in the invincibles team, for me, would be Saliba, Gabriel, White and Saka.

We had four of the greatest players in history in their position in Henry, Bergkamp, Vieira and Cole and I don't think any current player has their genius.

Saliba's one of the most talented defenders I've ever seen and I think he's got it in him to be regarded as an all-time great if he wins a PL and CL.
