Fact is that what Emery has achieved at Villa so far is far, far less than two strong title challenges leading to an expectation of winning the league. Villa being a lesser club both flatters his achievements there and will forgive him for not going further. Emery's at a different level as far as managing in England is concerned.

I also couldn't stand Emery's lack of a cohesive on-field vision. We were way too midtable in the way we played under him.

I think with how things went letting Emery go was the right thing but he didn't get the surrounding support that Arteta has enjoyed and he was managing some poor characters at that point. I have never really had any ill will to him though and fair play on what he's done at villa and beating Bayern on their season back in the champions League is a big thing for them.

Sicario2 - Tier 1

Many ppl argue Emery is the next best manager in the league after Pep. I guess Arteta needs to win some trophies to be in that conversation, also Emery has managed longer.

The question is if whatever reason is if Arteta left this summer would you take Emery to be his replacement if he was available ?

Sicario2 - Tier 1 Well, thing is, Arteta's not going to leave this summer and that's the reason we want him at Arsenal over Emery: because he's good, possibly extremely good, and he built what's here and the players love him.

There's a Lee Dixon interview out there about some of the goings-on during Emery's reign.

Emery had all displays and mentions of Arsenal's history removed from the walls and hallways of the training ground. Anything to do with 1989, the invincibles, pictures of Vieira, Bergkamp, etc.

Would Emery have been more successful if he was at Arsenal for 5 years? Perhaps. But the fact is, he was a good coach at the wrong club at the wrong time. And it did not take the club too long to figure out that they needed someone with more strength and passion for Arsenal. Arteta has that, and he coached under the current best manager in the EPL (Pep) so he learned a lot from that. Arteta was the right manager to bring in after the failed trial that was Emery.

Sicario2 - Tier 1 is what Henry has said all that controversial? People are making out like it's a slight on Arteta but he's just saying Emery deserved more time (which is debatable but not shady).

Don Pacifico it's just a bizarre thing to bring up considering Arteta has now overseen back-to-back title tilts involving points totals comparable to anything Henry was involved in his time as an Arsenal player, not to mention our current level.

There was little to suggest things were going to get better under Emery, given how bad the situation was in the end.

Burnwinter meant to say, I picked that up too. The players must be feeling pretty determined this season (as, I suppose, they should be after the last two) for Saka to have come out and said that on Tuesday. They ain't playing!

lorddulaarsenal I watched the 2-2 between us and Chelsea at Highbury in 2004/2005 recently. Henry scored twice; a lovely goal early and a cheeky free kick, while Chelsea mugged us off twice at set pieces (something we were often poor at under Wenger).

Our current side looks a lot more like that Chelsea side, which gave me a laugh.

Maybe I'll go with something similar, a 2-2, with our current lot scoring twice off set pieces.

lorddulaarsenal so hard to compare. This squad is probably more skilled than the Invincibles and has a total footballing edge. But this squad has nothing like Henry. Which would always put the Invincibles in contention

But one thing that's hard to compare is the goalkick rules has changed dramatically

I think they would

Yes they would, players over time generally get better and tactics are better than ever.

It is not always a fair comparison and teams should be looked at in the time frame they played in. Earlier this year I watched Arsenal vs Man Utd from 1997 and you watch the football on display and it looks nowhere near the quality of football these days. I think the PL on the whole has technically and tactically got a lot better than it ever was.

But it's not about Arteta. Henry isn't saying we should have kept Emery because he's better than Arteta. Basically just saying Emery is a good manager. It's not that deep.

I watched it too a couple of weeks back. I always lamented the fact that Wenger replaced Vieira with Fabregas (as great as the latter was), but the more egregious example was replacing Gilberto with Flamini (Fab and Flam started that game). What a fucking average player who left on a free and then Wenger brought him back. This cunt partnered Fabregas and Ozil, two of the best attacking midfielders of their generation.

Claudius more skilled wholistically perhaps, but the ceiling of individual skill in the invincibles is higher. bobby, Dennis, titi, cashley and paddy were master technicians

as for unai, he's found his level. a club with lowered expectations that's punching above its weight, with strong executive support, thats the perfect place for him. I'd wager he'll never be in a job at a title chasing club again

Claudius plenty. individual flair and invention. saka is never scoring the lob against schmeichal for example. he's probably technically able, but doesn't have that kind of imagination. sakas passing and linkup play is nowhere near either, but pires did come up playing as a 10 so that's understandable

Claudius very little. Saka scores as much, assists more, defends more, etc and has just turned 23. Pires is one of my all time favourite players but Saka is better.
