Wenger was a big problem because of his failings in the market and failure to build a proper team, but yes he was overachieving with that shit squad he had. We have since tried to improve it and is now underperforming.
Football has changed in the past few years. We need to target athletic strong players that can run on the flanks in combination with creative players in the middle.
I'm not altogether on board with the idea AW didn't build a proper team and that he was over achieving.
Whilst I agree he didn't build a 'proper' / balanced team that was capable of performing the duties expected from Defence, Midfield and Attack as stand alone units, IMO he built his teams based upon his technical and numerical requirements to play his free flowing rondos in transition, and supplemented them with elite level players in key positions and roles.
He still had this in the attack built around Ozil and Sanchez, but failed to provide similar quality in midfield or Defence, and that was the error as much as anything.
The problem post AW is that the 1st team and senior squad were not balanced in terms of a 'normal' style of play. This issue is still evident as seen with the players still here that were signed during his time - Ozil, Xhaka, Lacazette, PEA, Elneny, Mustafi, Sokratis, Bellerin, Kolasinac, Holding, Chambers. Most of these players are able to play in a style that is based more upon numbers and short passing, but are exposed under a more 'normal' playing style.
