daredevil it is indeed. And unfortunately it seems circumstances have conspired to ensure we do not peak as a team this term. Unfortunate, but it is what it is. Will force growth and drive improvement next season. The silver linings include both Nwaneri and Lewis Skelly's emergence, and our dominance at set pieces. As well as understanding that we still have lots of room for improvement on the wings and in the CF position. Everywhere else seems pretty solid. We will take what we can this year. Deep run in CL, end up 2nd if Liverpool maintains form or 3rd if we stumble badly. Retool for next year, go again. We are in good shape.

Coombs Sure but you definitely don't get to declare the highest spender always wins this league in the middle of a season when that's clearly not going to happen.

As with 2017, if not spending as much is our tried and tested excuse, we should be ready to capitalise whenever that excuse surely doesn't apply.

Point is that as in 2017 we're completely fucking up the opportunity this season.

The real issue is how we didn't win the title last season. The answer is City's corruption and Guardiola's stubbornness.

Liverpool are an excellent team that are probably going to finish on 90+ points this season. There has been a lot of weird cope about this this season.

DiabyKungFu combination of excellent manager scouting. They found a guy who wouldn’t need to build anything new. And a good squad overall with some of the best premier league players ever in good form.

I am a bit sad that the kids I used to wish list during Covid - Gravenberch and Szoboszolai - both ended up at Pool. They’re so good, especially the former.

Just assuming that other clubs wouldn't do anything to remedy their situation while we would improve because our squad was younger than theirs is so naive.

All I’ve said on this front is you’re better off with a group of players who are developing as you have a runway to do things. In contrast to late Wenger when we constantly had to turn over old players and couldn’t get stability. It’s about what you do to position yourself. I’m f course other teams have their own dynamic and you can’t control that - we can’t control that Pool’s squad has peaked well despite 3 legends potentially leaving. We can’t control that Rodri got injured.

The idea that anything is guaranteed in this sport - that is naive. You should ask yourself some basic questions

how many clubs have hit the 88 point mark we reached last year?
on average how do teams perform year-on-year?
what’s the impact of injuries to star players and key offensive/defensive partnerships on seasons?

The only person who is naive here is you if you think championships and transfers come easily

It might have been somewhat naïve at some stage, but looking at Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly now, it does appear likely we can improve a little bit.

With those two coming through, it's realistic to think that if we hang on to our contracted players who are in their prime, add forward power, and have slightly better luck with injuries, we'll continue on an upward trajectory next season.

We then pay £30m over the perceived value of Rice. MA & Edu drove hard for this & it must have hurt Lewis to sanction. This transfer in my eyes, changed our business for the last 3 windows. It made us have to chase sales even though we had Money (lots of it) available.

I haven't heard anything to make me believe Lewis is playing this sort of "ogre" role. If Lewis is delegated to sign off on larger investments, that's normal. We have other financial limits in play such as the cap of 70% revenue on wages for European competitors.

JazzG almost none of that aligns with actual reporting on these deals. What we heard about Watkins for instance is not that he was offered to us, its that we knew Villa had a PSR issue (which was true but they managed to sell Duran instead). Its also been reported that Arteta was one of the people who did really want Watkins but once the Duran deal was it became a near impossibility because Villas PSR was no longer in dire straits. Loads of other nonsense in there too.

Also the whole "he wont let them spend over value except when he does" stuff just makes it sound like a rant. We do need the financial boffins to restrain the managers spending, I think every club who wants a future needs that.

I don't think anything described there as a problem is really a problem. I think the thesis there is "Mikel Arteta is really good at coaching so we should make him the Supreme Dictator". I don't think that idea holds up to much scrutiny. It's fine to have checks and balances and it's good to not blow all your money.

Not sure I buy that approach, I think Arteta has been backed pretty well even with players that there were questions about it who I didn't really get why we went for them. I don't think it's a case of that haven't tried to go after who he wants, I doubt he's prioritised a forward because he saw Jesus, martinelli, Saka and havertz as enough. I think that was a mistake but that's the position he took.
