I am not saying he wasn't partially culpable, I am saying he was good at his job.

Lots of geniuses aren't great at managing themselves, and Wenger clearly needed a more structured environment to work his magic after he could no longer discover gems for peanuts.

But it's when he didn't any longer have to discover gems for peanuts that he failed.. When we finally had money and should've been able to mount a challenge he only bought Cech the entire summer.

But whatever your views, Wenger would sure as fuck manage to get a team - any team - to muster more than 4 shots on target across 180 mins of football.

That's when you need Gazidis to step in and do some work in fairness, but contrary to basically every other Premier League team we didn't spend the money from the upcoming tv deal in advance. Hence buying like a bunch of church mice that summer.

But then look at who we've spent big (c. £20m+) money on...without looking into it, I'd wager half of them haven't worked, which is not great conversion. Spending money has not been as big an issue over the last five years but we've invested poorly.

I don’t think anyone believes Wenger would do a worse job than Arteta. It's just that getting the successors wrong doesn't mean that the right decision would've been letting Wenger stay.

In any case, sooner or later wenger time would have come to an end. The club should have prepared accordingly for the transition. They did not.

I sincerely don't think any manager would have succeeded with the squads and players that were provided to them. It really isn't a coincidence that Wenger was failing to do what he had done with every team before with that lot.

Not beyond cup runs which both Emery and Arteta put together somewhat decently each season.
