Nah, he is realistic. It's better than pulling the wool over eyes and putting a positive spin on literally everything. Luiz being a good signing because he only cost 7 million. Jheez! I get the hype if the person is young. They're still in the optimist/deluded stage of following football, but once you have been around the block. You become far more realistic in your assessment, and don't delude yourself over anything or everything, because you have more negative reference experiences to keep you grounded.

P.S. I realise I have gone off on a completely different tangent. I had been meaning to get this off my chest for a long time.

I take your point about putting a lid on our hopes for young players, but I think you’ll find that on here most people are quite clear eyed when it comes to assessing player ability/ chances of success.

If the young player is from our academy however, and has a bit of talent, you can’t blame me / fans in general for supporting them a bit more than I would the typical footballer.

Ozil available but this is the one match-up out of the big 6 that I don't want him in. Spuds know how to handle the silky players, what they can't handle is spunk. I can't remember the last good Ozil performance against Spurs, unlike against Pool, Chelsea or Mancs.

Sounds like you’re describing a candidate for an Inter Milan loan spell.

I hope the players understand just how vitally important it is for us to beat Spurs and United, especially as both are wobbly. Beat both teams and we go a long way towards addressing the narrative of our top 6 record. Emery starts to write his own story as someone who has turned around our fortunes against big teams (minus Klopp’s roid runners). It also has the added benefit of thrusting both clubs into so-called crisis early on.we need to change the story of Arsenal. It impacts how our fans approach the club and each other, and it drives severe discounts of our players in the market

I think he’s somewhere in between. He’ll benefit from Emery always changing things up, I reckon he’ll play quite a lot at home for example.

Also worth pointing out that the two formations we’ve used this season both utilised a no.10 to some degree.

In any case the "otherwise he would have been loaned or sold" argument doesn't make sense though, since it's obviously very hard to offload him. To sell him he'd have to let go of tons of wages, and if we have to pay muxh of his salary while loaning him then we could just as well have him as he'll at least be of some use.

He was a monster in just about every single NLD while he played for them. Him and Kane were my biggest worries.

That's a fair observation. But does Ozil neatly occupy that 10 role? For example, Emery seemed to enjoy Ramsey's energy in an advanced role last season. This year, it appears Ceballos will be able to provide creative genius while also applying himself defensively.

Ozil also wants to lead a charmed life to be honest. Take a prior playmaker like Bergkamp. Bergkamp could play as a striker or operate as a trequartisa. Or take a guy like De Bruyne. He can play as a pure playmaker in the 10, fall back to the 8 or play on the wings. There are very few playmakers who are as intractable as Ozil.

He's okay from the right if there isn't a 10 in the say and he is given freedom to roam.

I think we'll missing a trick if we don't at least try to get a functioning front four of laca, Auba, pepe and Ozil. Emery won't use it though because he is scared witless by our defence (he's not the only one).
