Calum Chambers. Feels like neither Xhaka nor Guendouzi offer a genuine passing option to our CBs. Almost every time in that comp, Chambers is forced to pass to Maitland-Niles or kick it long. So much for Emery being focused on passing out from the back.

I like Chambers, but I suspect his aerial weakness will prove costly as the season wears on.

I think the weakest part of his defending is being flat footed in 1v1 situations.

There was one point in the first half where he let Joelinton get across the front of him for a free header at goal. If he had more to do and against better players, his poor awareness and lack of aggression would be a problem. This game suited him perfectly and he was very good.

Even with his faults, he's comfortably better than Mustafi and deserves his spot. I'm not sure it'll be long before David Luiz is in ahead of him though.

Most CBs are slow on the turn and lack agility, we're just used to our sub-six footers that defend more like a fullback than a CB. Chambers might only be 6'1" but he's a big, strong bloke. He does have a good turn of speed now as well. There was a game in pre-season in a chase back toward our goal where he left Mustafi yards behind him.

It did have some clues. I expect Xhaka and Guendouzi to be played at the base, and to exhibit similar vertical passing patterns to the attacking mids and fullbacks. The main difference is going forward is that both the fullbacks and AMs will be better.

Helps change the narrative. Most of us here thought he looked a bit short on Sunday. Makes the idea of a Xhaka, Ceballos, Ozil link-up more realistic

Perhaps. I’m guessing all the players get that instruction. I’d wager, though, that he just played his normal game, I.e. what he does naturally for Spain. During their championship run this past summer they all pressed the ball like wild things for most of their games. If we ever learn to put unified pressure on the ball like that we’d be forcing turnovers at a much higher rate.

True. You saw the graph that showed that we waste the most energy on pressing, because despite our high amounts of pressing we achiever few recoveries? Getting the coordination will be key to making us more effective.

Or just defend in a more conservative way. We'll have the pace for it once everyone is fit and we can knock this waste of time 'pressing' on it's head.

I agree. Bad pressing is one of the reasons our defence has been so bad, players commit themselves, are easily bypassed then then have a free run at the defence. We need to take a leaf from Klopp and leave the pressing for special occasions.
