We really did for the most part. People love bitching about Xhaka and Douzi but I thought bought played a really solid professional game, Douzi looks a year more mature in his play. Chambers was great though, the difference it makes having him over Mustafi is unreal. He's not going to suddenly turn into VVD but he's a better player than those who wanted him gone in the summer think.

Maitland-Niles after a shakey start had a great game too, obviously the goal is in large part down to him but his defending was committed and smart too. Like Douzi looked way more mature than a lot of last season.

Bar a couple of ragged moments I thought we looked better organised and more professional over all. Hopefully the 4-2-3-1 is settled on now and improves as players come back from injury.

1-0 win away at St. James Park is always a good result.

Id like to see willock in more of a centre mid role at some point this season

Yeah he looks a bit nervy, reminds me of Iwobi when he first came in, didn't take people on half as much. That said he's quite polished in his overall play. Compare him to Martenelli for instance who looks more confident and more natural but a lot more raw. A few games at this level and hopefully he'll take more risks and express himself more.

Agree - we were basically without Holding, Torreira, Tierney, Bellerin and a fully fit Ceballos, Pepe, Luiz and Lacazette who would all be starters. That's two thirds of our starting XI.

Only thing I'd dispute would be AMN being one of the better players. Had a couple of good moments but still made quite a few sloppy mistakes. Concerns me that he doesn't seem to be learning and that Bellerin is likely out for the next couple of months at least.

Nelson debut game, away from home first game of the season will always have the handbrakes on to a certain extent.

Once he finds his groove he will be awesome, showed some nice touches today. Much better than the erratic Walcott and Iwobi at the same age.

Agree. I feel like a good run in the team will help give him a bit more confidence. My expectations are relatively low for him given what he's shown for us today but I actually thought there were some really positive signs. Like you say Martinelli looked a lot less experienced by contrast.

Nelson’s introduction into the first team has been similar to Gnabry’s. Feels like he’s playing within himself. More concerned with not making any mistakes, which I think is understandable and also something he’ll grow out of. These minutes are invaluable.

Yeah, was thinking this during the game. He'll make a few mistakes along the way but he's so much calmer than Mustafi. That in itself should have a good impact on our overall defensive stability.

Nelson looked nervous but the quality is visible. I think he just needs a sense of belonging which, hopefully, should come with a run. He was able to feel confident at Hoffenheim and should get the same here

Really pleased with the win. Boring boring Arsenal but doesn't matter. Clean sheet should give the defence confidence. Newcastle couldn't fashion any chances. Nelson's movement off the ball and ability to find pockets of space is really encouraging. He will get better on the ball with more game time. Some very good signs with a lot of first teamers out.

AMN made me very nervous throughout. Feels like a real weak link from a defensive perspective. Monreal just weak in both directions.

As much as I don't love the Xhaka-Douzi midfield, getting our 1st choice fullbacks fit might be more important.

That Saint-Maximin looked like a substance-less flash in the pan type player.

Pepe can hold the ball and win a header. Should be a crucial out ball, which we desperately needed today. Ball just doesn't stick to Reiss, Pierre, or Mkhi.

EDIT: Nah, midfield is still crucial.

He had a very good second half.

I know he is much maglined but it would be silly to sell him at this point.
