Think Giroud was pissed off about Wenger benching him by that point. To be fair he absolutely was backup material by then, but as subsequent years have shown, he has remained a fairly durable and useful player at that level.

Unless you've got a super star you should have 2 forwards around Giroudsp level to rotate. Wenger played him more than he was able for.

To be fair to Giroud (which I don't like to be), we went and spent £50m on an upgrade to him in Lacazette who - maybe we used him wrong, I don't know - absolutely was not an upgrade. I don't blame him for being pissed off. Giroud and Auba may have made a lot more sense than Auba & Laca ever did.

Giroud should have been a great second choice striker. We signed him while we still had RVP and if we'd replaced him instead of just making Giroud the new first choice we'd have been in really good shape up front.

Thinking back to the summer of signing Giroud, I think the problem wasn't Giroud it was that we signed Podolski as well and perhaps Arsene had it in his head that HE would replace RvP. Podolski was no RvP.

Yeah Podoslki scored some crackers but he wasn't prolific enough for the amount he drifted out of games. When you think about it Theo, Giroud and Podolski was just short a star. They all contributed their fair share but none of them were really top drawer.

I remember Rafa Honigstein saying at the time we signed Podolski we'd signed someone to be an A or a B level player - but what we'd actually got was someone who was a C. I think that was right.

I did see him score an absolute ripper against Marseille though, so I guess it was all worth it.. 🙂

Podolski has the be among the worst Arsenal players I've seen when it comes to movement and positioning.

Agreed. I know that he was very popular with some Arsenal fans because of his socials, but I was very glad to see the back of him.

I think some of thats on Wenger too, he tried to make him a left winger and he clearly didn't have a clue out there.
