Its a lot like the Cech signing in that it never should have happened. Cech wasn't better than Szczesny when he joined us and Willian wasn't better than Pepe. Idiotic signings in both cases.
Yeah, I think the issue in both cases is looking at what we've got, deciding they aren't all that, and then going for really, really inadequate replacements.
Szczesny wasn't doing fantastic at Roma, I think it's fair to say that. his reputation in Italy wasn't great before Juve bought him off us. Pepe wasn't doing that well last season either, but why on earth do you then go and sign Willian and give him a fat sign-on bonus and a long-term contract that make him virtually unmovable? If you don't want Szczesny back you sign a keeper who's clear of him, not a man with a dadbod in his late 50s. If you don't want Pepe or don't think he is ready then sign someone who is actually good, not the bloke Chelsea has upgraded three times in 12 months! Same thing with keeping Luiz and not registering Saliba this season basically.
This was going on before Arteta and Edu arrived too like you point out, and it's definitely becoming a culture problem for us. We should be ashamed of being seen as the Chavs's bloody retirement home. They come here, they don't perform well on the whole, and then they leave while making snide comments about how it's not that important to be competitive at Arsenal. It always struck me as ungrateful from Cech to say that openly, but I think the real reason those comments made me angry is because I know it's true.
