Agreed flobs. I think Pepe is soft too. It's not a criticism, just an observation. Those kind of players start to perform when things are settled and enjoyable. You have to build up their confidence first though. Too bad for him that he had the misfortune of being the marquee signing of a club in turmoil.

This season is probably a writeoff for him at this stage. We'll just have to hope that he gets a good start next year, with a proper preseason and everything, because we can't afford him turning into a bona fide flop on our budget.

I’m not that worried about Pépé. I think there’s a few things happening here

delayed start due to Africa cup
low willingness by managers to play both Pépé and Ozil due to defensive work rate (this is an application problem both players urgently need to address)
fitting him stylistically. This goes back to my point yesterday about incoherent recruitment. Liverpool wanted Pépé because he can play an open counter game like Salah and Mané. He is not going to thrive in whatever it is we are doing where forwards are dropping back and trying to make something for themselves. If we continue playing this Emery anti-football, Pépé, Aubameyang and others will suffer

He's only being weighed down by the price tag. I think he'll be fine here.

Pepe is pretty decent in his defensive contribution IMO. Its more that both and Ozil disappear after about an hour, plus I'm not sure Ozil is really the best number 10 to play behind 3 runners, he doesn't hold in zone 14 and look for passes, instead he prefers to give and go. The whole idea that Ozil would be great with runners is off IMO. I think he works better with players who like that sort of interchange. He'd have been great in the team with Nasri, Fabregas, Rosicky, etc

I mean I would echo most of the comments on here, but I was specifically referring to Freddie comments on him not being picked due to how he's doing in training. I always think that's a bit of a red flag.

By most accounts, Freddie sounds like he's a good man manager, so hopefully he'll be able to coax more out of him.

I mean, he just said that the players he picked were based on how they did in training. Even if there isn't a "red flag" some of them have to not be picked.

Yeah but we are talking about two kids vs a record £70m signing. Leaving Saka on the bench wouldn’t be particularly noteworthy.

I don’t really care what the head coaches say, they’re not on a level playing field. It would take a lot more for Pepe to be left on the bench.

I'm hoping he's just in a bit of a funk due to the circumstances around the squad this season - which in itself isn't a great sign about his character - and that hopefully Freddie coming in gives a boost to morale which he'll feed off. If it doesn't, and he's not got the application, I think we've got a bigger problem as we just can't afford our marquee players to go down the Ozil route again.

Bringing on a kid instead of the 72 million pound marquee signing when chasing a goal was pretty damning. Can only hope we're not now stuck with another expensive dead weight that we won't put on the pitch.

How is this guy a deadweight after a couple of months? Have you guys studied a team like Liverpool? How long did it take for guys like Fabinho and Keita to contribute? How much did they cost? How old were each of these guys when they arrived?

Now tell me, why are we already body bagging and toe tagging Pépé’s career?

People didn't hesitate to call Fabinho a flop, and things haven't changed. It seems hard to understand that some players take to the league really easily, some take their time and some never do, but that in any case it's impossible to tell as early as this.

I suspect they're gonna have to wait for a long time for that to happen.

Fabinho is an excellent example though.
