If I was to guess, it would be that there isn't really an easy handle for the media to get to grips with. Emery is fairly uncontroversial, Pepe is our record signing but really most of the country barely knows about his career prior to joining Arsenal and we're still limping forward while United and Spurs are genuinely awful. Ozil generates some clicks but if he isn't playing then there's not much to write about week to week.

Getting that goal from the penalty helps too. Its not as good as story when he has a goal and a couple of assists. Harder to explain he's been underwhelming to the tabloid readers without a "£72m for no goals" headline.

There was a few seconds where the handbrake came off and he left 2-3 defenders in bits. Then he stepped on the ball and left it behind. Kind of sums up where he's at. My french colleague at work is usually bang on about ligue 1 imports to England and he's convinced pepe will be a star but he'll take 6-12 months to fully acclimatise.

We have to drop him at this point. Hes beyond desperate. He doesn't show for the ball. Fucks up every pass that's over 3/10 difficulty. He isn't even closing passing angles when the opposition is playing out. Ozil has never been that lazy.

Ita clear his confidence is completely shot and plying him when hes hiding from the ball isn't gonna help him. Bringing him on fresh with 20 minutes to go would be a lot better for him and us.

This is what I meant earlier in the thread. He amazes and disappoints you in one move. Don't think you can train that out of someone.

I don't think he will get the opportunity to come good, if his confidence is shot already. You need to have some form of belief if you are to acclimatise. He already looks like someone who needs a change of scenery.

He's not hiding at all, he's getting on the ball as much as anyone else who's been playing on the wing for us under Emery.

He was also closing down passing angles in the first half. Only after he messed up his ball control a couple of times did his head drop. If happens to literally every player at some point.

I can see the benefit of leaving him out and letting him attack tired defenders for the last 30 but I'd give him a couple more starts to fix it by himself. Not like we have other players banging on the door Martinelli looks better utilised up front or on the left.

I don't think he was hiding out of cowardice. He only started doing that when he was busted physically, which happened fairly early in the 2nd half. You also need to factor in that emerys 'style' seems to be physically demanding, at the cost of sapping the players of creativity/attacking inspiration

Last season Willock looked hopelessly out of place his performances were Eastmond levels of bad, now he's the future heartbeat of this team. Ceballos was one of the hottest prospects of Europe for a couple years now after a difficult start people don't see anything in him worth persisting with. Now Pepe struggles after dragging his last team into the CL with half of Europe on his tails and now his flaws can't be trained out of him ffs.

It's not just a lack of patience any longer, you seriously have to question whether some posters here actually watch games with an open mind or whether they're just pouncing on anything they think they're seeing to justify whatever stance they had set up from the beginning.

There are just as many examples of players who don't ever come good. Pepe is his own unique case (obviously), and it's all up in the air whether he will overcome his struggles or not.

P.S. I don't think Willock will become the heartbeat of the team, and I think we should stick with Ceballos and sign him. So yeah! 😆

There's definitely some fans who fit that description especially with regards to certain players (like Xhaka), but in Pepe's case I think it's just a combination of the price tag, expectations and the nature of his performances that's bringing about the worry and perhaps some irrational snap judgments.

He was making a timid effort to close the angle after the pass was played as a token gesture. Same as martial frequently does when hes sluking. Its shameful from a fast powerful guy who offering very little going forwards.

I get that we all want him to succeed, but let's not lose all reason.

Yep a little bit. Just to note my suggestion had less bearing on Pépé as I'm not not all upset with his overall contribution or in doubt of his potential. It was more about trying a different front-line for a bit that may actually have a lot of goals to offer in the immediate term.

Adaptation is nothing but learning and unlearning. I think he has shown flashes which is encouraging. I would persist with him. He might benefit from Lacazette coming back too, having someone to play off.

I don't disagree. Giroud and Lacazette looked much better in their second seasons. It's why the hype was a little unjustified, but I guess the price tag made sure of that. I think there's more chance of him coming good, but I feel like I've seen this story before. Wouldn't surprise me, either way.

Emery can't afford to wait around on anyone. Wenger might have, and after years of him, the fans, too. But now we have a manager on the last year of an unsuccessful contract, and a fan base who are ready to pounce on him when things go to shit. Might not be a good environment for Pepe to blossom, but that's not the priority.

It's a tough one. Here's your record signing having a stinker of a season so far but you want to give him every chance of finding form. At what point do you pull him and give his spot to someone else if he doesn't deliver ? I feel the break now could be good for him to get some help and confidence. Weird how we needed a wide player for so long , spent the big bucks but it's our young players Saka/Martinelli who look more likely to give something to the team right now

Emery won't give Pepe time or an environment to blossom because we want him to succeed or feel good at the club, you do it because if he reaches the level he showed at Lille he's probably our best attacker by a good margin. Similar to Ceballos you don't persist because you want the loan work out you do it because if he reproduces the form that made Madrid buy him you have a player with a unique skillset that no Willock or Guendouzi can boast. It's not a favour you're doing them it's an investment.

My opinion is Emery should ignore the critics and tell the player he backs him 100%, play him in the first team and, most importantly, only sub him off when he absolutely has to. The subbing off every match and playing him against lower quality Europa opposition are psychologically damaging in my opinion as his ego/confidence (that all performers need) is taking a bashing. Wenger did something similar to Ramsey when he was recovering from the broken leg and we got that amazing season out of him. Emery is already doing similar with Xhaka who he doesn't use for Europa matches and has only been subbed off once, this season, when we were down to nine men against Villa.
