though it makes perfect sense I think it would be way too confusing for the average man. they'd say why's the line 2 feet wide? don't know what the perfect solution is. needs a lot of thought.
It has always been several feet wide though, just not officially. Just look at that linesman when we played United who tried to rule Auba offside even though there was enough distance between him and Maguire to park a bus.
