Sure, but why would you look at anything that way? The accurate question is whether he's a better player. You can assemble a team that is nothing but good value for the money you spend and then finish midtable. I'm pretty sure there isn't a single United supporter who regrets that they didn't splash on David Luiz instead.
They might if you expand the question though. Put it this way, would you take Maguire and James or Luiz with Saliba coming in a year and Pepe? As rich as United are, their resources are finite and I’m not sure Maguire represents best use of those resources (and that’s on the assumption that he’s better than I think).
I really don't think those are the only options. United's fans are all mad because they fucked up with Dybala, but they don't seem to think they missed out on a forward because they signed Maguire, and I don't think they did either. They just messed up the window, bit similar to how we did really but in the opposite end of the field. They failed with Dybala, we failed with Upamecano.
If you're asking whether I'd have a 19 year old Saliba a year from now or Maguire this season, then I'd obviously pick Maguire. Who even knows what Saliba's going to look like when he arrives, if he gets injured playing for Saint Etienne or falls out of favour, or if it turns out he's not as brilliant as Youtube has led our fans to believe? What if he's not good enough to play regularly for us for another year or two? We've gambled, and I have good hopes it's going to pay off, but it's a risk, and not a very small one. Youth players are nothing but risks.
