Wenger didn't do anything with the youngsters toward the end of his reign. Have you already forgotten how Iwobi and Bellerin looked rejuvenated when Emery took over

What about Saka or Martinelli then?

Anyway my point wasn't that Emery was great with youngsters (although he gets far too little credit for that) it was that latter day Wenger was poor with them.

I agree with the latter - Wenger lost his touch or his nerve with younger players by 2013. Emery's done well to give Saka, Martinelli and, in particular, Guendouzi chances but this isn't new. Even in late stage Wenger we'd have a few young players (Bellerin, Iwobi, Chambers, Holding) turn up and give the crowd a bit of hope for a few months. Based on last week's Europa game and performance I'd say that's still more likely to happen than not.

Really I would only say Guendouzi has been an unqualified success thanks to Emery - and tbf that's not a bad legacy to leave us with.

The reason Guendouzi is impressive is that he came from outside, earned a place in the team, kept it, and has continued to improve in his sophomore year. All as a teenager. He should serve as the example to follow for all our kids. Opportunity exists if you have the talent and the will.

Yeah, Wenger become quite conservative with kids towards the end, though that's largely because the squad was bloated with senior fringe players who demanded all the mins.

Thing is the squad wouldn't be the same. He'd given up pushing kids and probably would have nixed the Pepe deal. He'd have held onto Mhki, etc and you'd still have Xhaka every game.

Nelson, Iwobi, Holding, Nketiah, Maitland-Niles. Come on now, he was staying true to his approach even if it was shrouded by other factors and wasn't as central as prior years.

Iwobi is the only one there Wenger gave a lot of minutes to.

I think that's a good point. It's not Wenger vs Emery.

It's Wenger vs the new structure that we've rolled out. I'm pretty happy with the way things are set up at the club right now, even if we've got the wrong head coach. Wenger would certainly get this lot playing better football but there's no way he'd sign up to having Edu and Raul taking such an active roll in the running of the club.

That's fair enough. His endeavour to not get the best squad to help his cause is annoying.

This thread has been pasted before here but it's still scary how he could predict everything about Emery. It's like he has come from the future.

Emery's team is always exactly the same, terrible away from home, throw away massive leads and is too conservative even with the players he have at his disposal.

Emery's approach is basically that of a Cup manager at a Europa level club that is not a genuine contender to achieve CL qualification via league position. IMO this approach is why he can succeed in Cup comps in head to head clashes, but fails over the duration of a league campaign. It's also why he can succeed against bigger / higher ranked clubs (as seen with the improved results v top6 in losing less games), but he struggles against teams we are expected to dominate. I think it also impacts his relationship with top level players such as at PSG, and part of that is down to his basically conservative nature to his approach to the game.

i remember reading that thread last year, and getting a gnawing feeling in the pit of my stomach that it'd be spot on. his methods always seem boil down to broadly the same outcomes
