It's not all downside, but I feel that it has been the bootstrap that prevented us from finishing in the top 4 both in Wenger's last season and Emery's first. We ended up focusing too much on that competition and the league suffered because of it. I think it's much more important to challenge for CL than settling for EL. We still have Carabao Cup to play the youngsters, but hopefully the most promising ones follow in Eddie's tracks and end up going on loan next year.

Also worth pointing out that we're talking about a very extreme what if scenario here. Does anyone really think we'll finish outside the top 7? We have a squad that anyone even remotely competent could finish in the top 3 with this year.

Not saying he's the answer, but if the board wanted Mourinho, I bet they could have him in the dugout for next weekend. Allegri is free, too.

I get sticking by him over the summer, I do. But we've reached an irreversible slump now. Everyone can see it. Just like in Wenger's final season.

Mourinho is probably a better bet than Emery but if you’re KSE and you hire that guy, you better make sure he wins a league or Champions League by end of next season.

We should fire Emery and give the team to Ljungberg until the end of the season. Won't be any worse than this. We can then make a long term decision early summer.

Ljungberg would be good for encouraging youth to come through, but has a feeling of Ole at the wheel about it.

Not wanting to nitpick but thats just prize money. We are in the top 3 in gate receipts in europe so there's another 20m or so to tack into the prize money. We can't underrate the importance of the bottom line here. I'm not entirely convinced the europa league was the distraction its being painted as. I think emery would have lost the plot last season regardless of the europa league

I think we make top 4 without Europa League. That competition sapped us.

He did a relatively good job of using kids but our squad was thin. He’s using the squad well this season. I would advocate using kids the whole way in Europa but now that we have fucked up the league, priorities will flip, just like last season.

We’re a circus now and it’s all down to Emery. Can’t believe I’m saying this but if there was any way to know this was how it would turn out 15 months into Emery’s reign, I would rather we’d stuck with Wenger.

He’s done. Tricky run of fixtures now. He needs to win them all and do it playing well if he’s to survive.

Not that I wanted Wenger to stay, but if the choice was him or Emery, give me the old French guy right now. That’s how bad Emery is.

Hindsight is a great thing, but we got this appointment terribly wrong.

Who could possibly have predicted hiring Emery would turn out poorly? I think you'd need to be some sort of godly clairvoyant or elite football super genius to have seen that coming.

Not really. He had a very decent CV and a respectable reputation in European football. It just hasn’t worked out here for him, but it wasn’t due to a lack of pedigree.

absolutely. wenger had to go. it was the first step to finding the right man for the job. now we have make that decision again, and it really shouldn't be difficult for our board if results continue this way into christmas

i saw emery's appointment as sound but unspectacular at the time. we now know that his tenure at psg was quite prophetic, what with the convulsive tactical changes and alienation of the dressing room. i think these 2 jobs back to back has effectively blacklisted him from coaching any top clubs in the future
