Still not convinced with our defending. The ease with which they scored those two goals should be very concerning to Emery.

Speaks volumes of what, exactly? That "we" don't know is meaningless. Anyway, we know plenty if we use our eyes instead of projecting our own ideas onto the team.

The fact we don’t know can be a good thing and a bad thing, opposition managers find it difficult to find weaknesses specific to individuals but on the other hand the team lacks stability.

There’s a tentativeness to us. This team needs more confidence. Defenders and midfielders especially. We take the safe easy route too often, and once it’s not there we start to crumble.

Let me expound on that a bit more. So I watch carefully once we start trying to pass the ball around under pressure. There is always, or most times, initially a small window of opportunity for a pass into the midfield from the defender. The defender sees this and instead of trying to slide the pass through, he turns back to pass even further back or to the goalie. It falls on the midfielder to be aware of what’s around him and to come towards the ball and demand it. A quality midfielder should be able to receive the ball, and turn out his marker, or feint him and give him pause, get him off balance and either dribble past or get a forward pass off. Once you do that once or twice, your marker falls back, and as a team we can press forward and keep the opposition team pinned back.

Taking the easy route and going all the way back to Leno has the opposite effect. They gain confidence in their pressing. They gain ground. They begin to pressure us. And we progressively lose control of the midfield and the game.

People moaned that Wenger was too tactically inflexible, but at least he had conviction. Emery is the polar opposite and doesn't inspire any confidence or continuity with his constant changes. I don't see us improving defensively and another 50+ goals looks on the cards. We're also one fullback injury away from playing 5 defenders which means that Bellerin and Tierney/Monreal have to stay fit, and/or Kolasinac and AMN need replacing.

Seconded. Even during Wenger era when we have no confidence this is a big problem. Players don't take responsibility enough to pass between the lines and move forward. As a result we waste time and opportunity to rebuild again.

Compare to a team like Ajax and you can see a huge difference.

There is nothing there, other than passing out of the back.

I actually agree with Emery on passing out the ball from the back, the problem he is and will be let down from Mustafi and co.

The this is the second preseason Emery has had, so you would have thought that a basic pattern and structure would be there.

I can’t see it, but for those who can, please share exactly what it is you see.

Our defenders aren't good passers, our midfielders aren't good receivers. Been a problem for years, basically dating back to when xhaka and mustafi entered the picture. There's no cost to squeeze us high. I'm hopeful a combination of ceballos and pepe will alleviate some of the problems. Both are good at picking the ball up in deeper positions and inviting pressure

Tell me what you think you see any team do. It's a totally nonsense demand. Emery plays with hard running CMs, a B2B-style AM, and technical wingers who act as inside forwards to allow the FBs to overlap. It isn't fuckin rocket science.

You can clearly see this has been worked on in training. It's finding most of our squad out, but even they have improved. This line of discussion is predicated on wilfull ignorance and a dislike for the man, though, so there isn't much to be said because it's a red herring.

I think we’ll see a fluid rotation (starting XI) like we did last season. Would imagine Xhaka, Willock and Ozil will start vs Newcastle. Guendouzi and Torreira will be eased back in as starters, and Ceballos will be offered sub minutes quite quickly.

Iwobi will play a fair amount at LW, while Pepe’s arrival means Laca and Auba will alternate as our central striker. Think our rotation will help us press/attack, but again we’ll look disjointed.

Facts dont mean shit any more, it's all about feelings. I haven't even watched the game but it's telling how upbeat this place was around half time when we were leading and how quickly Emery stopped having a plan altogether after FT
