There was nothing wrong with how he was handled other than the failure to complete the paperwork on time to send him on loan.

He's 21 years old and is playing phenomenally well for us.

Like Claud said, it was never the crisis it was made out to be but rather just another stick to beat Arteta with.

As I said, I know what I was reading six months ago. You were wrong then, why should I care what was being said two years ago? Is it relevant to anything happening now?

what on earth was I wrong about? I never believed arteta hated saliba. youre the one that said the line on here was that everyone thought arteta hated saliba, which was patently untrue when the opinions were way more varied than that. stop projecting generalised bullshit, it comes across as unnecessarily smug even if you don't intend it to be

Can't we all just get along ? I also think Arteta and Edu fucked up at first with him, but he should have not gone to the press, they all messed up...but I'm sure he will sign. He is balling out, Arteta loves him, it's all good.

You know what, HomeSteak, yes, I'm on board with that. I always got on with Gazza (at least, I think I did) in the old days. Definitely mad to be falling out over this stuff at any time, but especially now. I apologise for my generalisations, Gazza.

Like what Arteta said he was worried about their relationship after the start they had, Saliba obviously wasn't happy too which is why he gone to the press and made noise about staying at Marseille.

Firstly it's credit to both of them for looking past those issues at the start, 2ndly credit to Arteta for immediately playing him this season and pushing White to RB instead and lastly as Saliba mentioned time and time again he's a die hard gooner so hope he signs.

Unless Saliba refuses to sign an extension, then the whole issue can be relitigated, but until then, let's just all be happy so far everything seems to have worked out for this season and hopefully beyond. Time to look ahead!

And for Arteta to come out and said there's no problems now and they are working perfectly, it means he has confidence Saliba will sign.

So far we have never fuck up any new contracts for our young first teamers. That's something Arteta and Edu is damn good at.

Can't say I'm overly worried about Saliba's contract. If I was in his position I wouldn't be in a big rush to sign either. We haven't been in the CL in years so I'd be waiting to see how the season pans out before committing too. He'll most likely get more money by waiting but unless we completely implode I don't see him leaving. He's got plenty of time on his side if he wants to play somewhere else in his career and he seems to be getting everything you'd want at this stage of his career football-wise. Of course footballers and agents aren't always rational but I'd be pretty surprised if he doesn't sign a new deal.

Yeah definitely, even at our absolute worst they managed to keep whoever they wanted to keep. Now that we're looking levels better on the pitch there's almost 0% chance we're messing Saliba's extension up; even if we have to give him 200kpw so what, that's him tied down until he's 26 or so, he's already among the best CBs in the league and our wagebill is very low according to all reports.

Arteta acknowledging there has been friction shouldn't have caused the shitstorm it did - the point to take from it is they're on good terms now. Saliba is a gooner and we're fucking top of the fucking league where's he supposed to go anyways

These one year options are fascinating … is the idea that if a player decides they're going to play hardball, the club can just extend on a whim?

If Saliba were to try running down his contract, up to what point (how far in advance of his nominal contract end date) could we let things run before we have to declare we are exercising that option?

No idea re any time restrictions - worst case scenario being we could do so at any time he is still under contract?

That said IMO he'd be hard pressed to find another group of players with the same levels of infectious joy and comraderie, let alone to be given the support and confidence to play his game from the manager.
