I think he will be huge for us. His level of performance last 2 seasons is super consistent and definitely better than even Gabriel when he was in Ligue 1.

Easily will be our best defender if he was integrated in.

Looks like this loan was a big success, needs to be given a chance here. Also need to be wary as he has 2 years left on his contract.

If it's only 1 year left I'd still reject a deal, take a loan and then sign for a UCL club as a free agent.

Yeah those comments came about the same time as Marseille admitting they could not afford his likely transfer fee to buy him outright. Since then he's said he will return at the end of the loan, but that he is also happy to stay at Marseille if it could be arranged.

TBH I'm more 'concerned' about the persistence of the talk of us being willing to sell Gabriel as I do not see Arteta using a right footed CB at LCB, let alone that the reported reason for us to do so is to sign Melo ffs. IMO it's b.s. unless someone wants to make it worth our while with an offer we cannot refuse.

Does their transfer ban not apply for players they have on loan or something?

In January, Gueye was banned for four months by FIFA while OM were prevented from signing players this summer. However, Gueye and Marseille immediately protested to The Court of Arbitration for Sport which suspended the sanctions imposed waiting on an appeal.

Although a transfer ban is still possible, with a date for the hearing now set for October, Marseille will be free to sign players as usual, at least until then.

Moot point.

No club in France except PSG can afford paying 40-50m or more.

Considering the success he's had this season then 40-50m should be the minimum expected for any transfer fee.

we can obviously force him to come back and play for us, but ultimately it's all going in the wrong direction. at this point it's highly doubtful he sees his future at arsenal, or would want to sign a new deal

Look at it from his POV, he comes Arsenal and he plays europa league, without a guaranteed starting spot, and a manager in Arteta who doesn’t trust him, has treated him awfully and have his number away to a new 50m signing at CB. Or he could stay in Marseille a French club in the CL, where he’s a guaranteed starter, possible captain and a better chance of getting into France’s World Cup squad.

Add to that he must have had a word with Arteta who probably has said he’s coming as a 3rd choice CB.

It’s a no brained from his POV. Just a shame Arsenal lose out because of Arteta.

It's 100% down to Arteta if we lose him. We have been warned countless of times that something is not right yet people choose to believe the naive theory that we loaned him out to gain more experience lmao

Marseille have rich owners and will most likely play CL next season. Plus if we're being honest we haven't exactly gotten value out of the vast majority of our recent sales. If we do end up selling - and Saliba seems to be open to the possibility - the fee won't stop the deal from happening

I'll hold back with my views lest Burnsy blows another fuse coming in to call everyone unhinged conspiracist and epileptic again.

Best thing we can do for both Saliba and the club, if he's not going to start for us next year, is to agree to loan him back to Marseille on the condition that he extends his deal with another two years or so. Arteta is not going to be here forever and Saliba is an Arsenal fan who might have another 15-16 years left at top level. Hopefully he realises that things can change in the near future.

Imagine you have a world class CB in the making and he never got a chance to play for you... and has no intention of playing for you either.
Such mismanagement rewarded with a 3 year contract on the back of 3 straight defeats.

Not a coincidence he waits to see where we landed regarding the Champions League before this sort of story comes out.

Continuing at Marseille on loan is a moot point, he's under contract, if he refuses to return we have to either extend him, sell him or enforce a return.

You lot go lightly on this kid for the number of self-serving statements he and his agents pump out. Seems like a little gobshite to me yet all we hear is how he's been mismanaged.

he's a young player that has been horribly managed. he wasn't wrong to have some level of expectation about playing time when being signed for 27m. instead he got loaned, and when he came back, he was punted around the U23s, and loaned again. then we gave his number away to another player. never seen us do any like this, just bizzare. guendo at least got minutes before he was deemed an enemy of the state. if saliba didn't handle himself well in his interactions with arteta, well shit, it was an opportunity to use his man management chops to turn the situation around. instead it became another in a series of indiscriminate freeze-outs by arteta

I was willing to give Arteta the benefit if White turned out to be amazing.

White has been decent in bursts but 50m? Jury out on that one at the very least.
