Qwiss probably more to do with his centre forward play capabilities. If we are playing Barca who consistently use a dangerously high line, Martinelli could work as a 9. But our typical posture attacking low and mid blocks requires someone who is physical, can play back to goal and is able to bring others into play. I can think of 4 or 5 players including Saka who I’d rather try in that context.

I'm not talking about first choice. I'm talking about instead of Trossard sometimes. He's not exactly a physical back to goal player either. Actually none of our CFs really play with their back to goal now that I think about it.

Qwiss Jesus, Havertz and even Merino can all play with the backs to goal.

Qwiss watch this for what i mean. you'll see Gabriel receiving the ball back to goal a number of times in a way that Martinelli does not. Jesus has great lower body strength.

lorddulaarsenal his injuries have been catastrophic. if he was fit, we would be much better at controlling the centre of the pitch.

Claudius he'd probably have been less effective than Merino. Next time he's fit we need to wrap him in cotton wool until the transfer window opens and get rid. The biggest wage issue in the entire squad.

Why bother bringing up injured players? Kai and Jesus aren't available and Tross is the one playing CF. Martinelli should have been tried there I reckon.

Coombs just a comment that we planned for them, shit happens. now we need to adapt. Unfortunately, football is not a liquid labour market. You bring folks in on long contracts - which is money you don't have to deploy elsewhere. so when they get injured, your first order of business is to nurse them back to health in the short term, and in the longer term look to replace them. but that replacement also comes in the context of other squad maintenance and growth objectives.
i'm hoping Jesus returns next year. also hoping that we get 2 additional top notch forwards. this brutal schedule needs lots of very high quality players at your disposal

Claudius the problem with Jesus is there was plenty of warning he had injury issues already at city then he had significant injuries at Arsenal. Once that first one happens we should have been looking to move him on or discount his influence from the squad because of availablity. But we seem to have based our squad assuming he'd be perfectly fine and I think that's deluding yourself poor squad building from the club.

awooga83 hard to say what's going on with all of these guys. Both Ousmane Dembele and Robin van Persie suffered injuries for a long term, and then suddenly found health and basically turned into the best players in their leagues overnight. they put him through a medical. i doubt we have a team doctor who goes through player data and ignores warning signs just because a coach likes a player.

We had Jesus on the market all last summer. No buyers showed interest, presumably because his wages are high, he's not a prolific scorer, his mentality is suspect and he's physically brittle. The mistake was then to kid ourselves we'd get lucky when those other clubs wouldn't.

Obviously he's gifted but he's been the biggest issue in the squad for a while.

Allegedly we're still looking to sell to buy this summer (take that with a grain of salt, but that's the commentary travelling with our equally alleged pursuit of Nico Williams).

How about with Tomiyasu and Calafiori? I remain very skeptical of the process given they came from the same club.

awooga83 easier said than done. You will free up You’re still going to take an £18m hit on the income statement from letting him go. You will still probably need to pay him his outstanding £27m in wages (or significant portion of it). Based on this, there’s actually very little upside to letting him go.
If he’s a trouble maker like Ozil, maybe you can calculate some value of harmony it brings to be rid of him. But can’t see it.

Claudius we got rid of Aubameyang and paid him like 10m to go away even though he was our top scorer the season before and won us the FA Cup. If we could release him for his contract he should be fair game. Jesus is nowhere near the player Auba was and makes substantially more. And we make substantially more now than we did when we were finishing 8th so can absorb that amount much easier.

Big Willie similar to what I mentioned regarding Ozil. We got rid of him for culture change reasons. We wanted to reset the squad quickly versus taking our time the way United has tried over the last 3 years. But go and look at our financials over that period. Not pretty. Big losses. We basically took a “big bath” in accounting terms.

invisibleman18 been discussed extensively here. What Tomi appears to be suffering from would likely been impossible to pick up in a medical.

Claudius I dunno how much of a trouble maker Auba and Pepe were, they certainly didn't seem like it at the time. Especially Pepe who didn't say jack despite hardly playing.

But I did say we were happy to take those losses as if they were nothing despite being not in Europe for a season and the other seasons being in EL. If we could do it then for so many players we released who were under contract, then with all out CL revenue over the last couple of seasons as well as the revenue we made finishing in 2nd 3 times in a row should put us ibn a much better position financially to get rid of Jesus if we wanted.

Big Willie it was plain to see from the outside that we had a massive culture issue in the club. And I don’t know how you missed all the press about Arteta and Auba’s issues around timekeeping. He was always late to practice and was once pulled from starting lineup for arriving late in that gold Lamborghini of his.
