I'm an Arsenal fan, I won't think about Hale End Boys like Saka with "loving ruthlessness", whatever that's supposed to mean, I'll leave that kind of corporate speak to Arteta and instead support them no matter what, unless they turn out to be like Greenwood or something similarly horrible.

And if they thought the same way about Arsenal, Martinelli would be off to Liverpool this summer. I'm sure all that loving ruthlessness would quickly turn into ruthless hate in that case.

Fair play, we can return here when what I've described above takes place. The best situation would be for us to have so many of these beloved starlets we can't keep them all.

Also, if you can find a corporate figure using my phrase "loving ruthlessness" ... they should be promoted.

Well I'm German, "loving" in general doesn't really figure into the spoken language 😆

I just don't think that the love and support of fans should only last as long as the boys are conductive to victory, you can argue the club needs to be ruthless with them if they no longer perform adequately, but as a fan, I don't want to be rational and pragmatic, I wanna be emotional and I do want to cling to the romantic idea of this team staying and growing together for the next decade.

Agreed. No one knows what will happen in 3, 5, 7 years and Martinelli is likely talking through youthful exuberance but it's great nonetheless. And you want every player in there to want to stay for life until they don't.

Yeah there has to be room for some romanticism in the game still or else whats the point. There is no point in talking about culture, Arsenalisation, etc if we aren't doing absolutely everything to hang onto our own academy players.

I love Martinelli but is anyone concerned that he has only scored 1 in the last 16 games?

I appreciate playing ahead of Nuno Tavares recently is going to affect your game and will increase your defensive duties and maybe take something away from going the other way.

However, if he wants to take it up to the next level I think his recent goalscoring record needs to improve especially for one with so much talent as Gabi.

He got an assist on Sunday. I don't really care whether it's an assist or a goal as long as he helps us to score goals.

That being said, I would start ESR ahead of him at this point in time. If Tierney was playing I'd have Pépé ahead of him as well.

He's not yet 21 and this is the most minutes/matches he's had in a season. Fine if he's a bit inconsistent (he's not the only one in this team).

He's on a poor run, reverted a bit to his head down gung ho approach which got him nowhere. I'd play ESR over him right now but there's very much a good player there. He's just a kid still.

I think Arteta loves him. He's still picked over ESR and I reckon its because of Martinellis constant pressing.

agree qwiss. martis form tapered off quite a while ago, but his energy is a big reason arteta kept picking him

To be fair to him, it's his goals that have dried up but his all round performances have still been solid. He presses well, he dribbles well but doesn't get much in the way of link-up play from Nuno (Cedric on the other side is a far more reliable foil for Saka).

All that being said, still got an assist at the weekend.

Agree, Arteta has had plenty of chances to drop him if he didn't trust him. Odegaard's preference for drifting to the right and having Tavares behind him can't make it easy but he'll need to step up his productivity a lot next season. His decision making needs to improve and he needs to get into goal scoring positions more often.

I think so too. Maybe with Eddie up front we'll see more of Smith-Rowe again now, because Eddie presses a lot from the front too. It's the off-the-ball movement we're missing now, and The Smith is top notch in that aspect.

Arteta has them playing in that half space on the left since Tavares has come in. In theory it should suit ESR more which is why I think he's been starting more recently, but he doesn't look like he really knows how to get involved in that role.

Its funny I'd tend to agree with you about that but I decided to take a look at the stats for passing, shooting, etc and they're generally about the same over the last 6-7 matches. What is also very noticeable from looking at that is both are getting a lot less of the ball in recent weeks. Even against Palace ESR got around twice as much of the ball as he has recently and the same applies with Marti against Soton. To be expected against better opposition I suppose but I think its illustrative of our lack of control since Partey got injured.

Hoping to see us go back to a 4-3-3 against Leeds personally. Push Xhaka up and get Martinelli/ESR playing further up/wide.

More to the point I think Elneny has been doing well enough with his anticipation and positioning to suggest he can operate as a lone #6, provided the #8s give him a passing option to break the press.

I also think the double pivot as #6 impacts the ball supply on the left flank as Xhaka is more risk adverse playing out from the back when he is deeper, meaning the ball ends up over on the right and eventually gets to Odegaard.

It's not about them, it's about Nuno. They don't trust the lad so we've been heavy on the right for build-up now.
