Was just about to post that, Klaus. We'd be so much better off spending that money on the defense. CB is, indredibly enough, the only huge hole in the squad at the moment. The rest of it isn't perfect, but it'll do.

Zaha isn't close to City level. Thats the issue. Auba and Aguero pretty close, Pepe is (hopefully) as good as Sterling, etc but Zaha isn't as good as Sane, Mahrez, Bilva, etc he's just not on that level.

Yes, that would be pretty damn annoying. I just have no belief whatsoever that these priorities conflict with one another.

I think our signings are more contingent upon sales relative to the wage distribution across positions in the squad (loosely, like GK, Defense, Midfield, and Attack). I don't think they are tied so much to who we sign in those categories separately. If we're pursuing a CB, we're still pursuing one regardless of Zaha/Pepe. If we fail to sign a CB, I'd blame it on a failure to get rid of Kostafi more than anything else.

It'd be the club's choice to operate like that though. If we signed Zaha and not a CB we could blame it on not being able to get rid of Kostafi, but the reality would still be that we could've bought a CB for the Zaha money and let the wage distribution across positions be whatever it'd be.

That's very true, but I also think they are keen to not only solve our weaknesses as a squad, but our horrible imbalances. I also think squad imbalance creates a lot of other kinds of tension in the dressing room that management might see as highly detrimental, especially after the last couple of years.

it would be mildly amusing if we cucked napoli for a 3rd time, but yes, i agree if there's money in the kitty it all must be diverted to the defense

Me neither. Although putting Auba on the wing marginalizes him somewhat, I'm kind of excited about the trio with him, Lacazette and Pepe. They're all very different players and I think it could work well. A runner and a dribbler on the wings and a workhorse in the middle, all of which very dangerous if given the ball in a good area. In addition to this, we already know that Laca and Auba play well together, so the only thing changing could be that they get a third player joining the attack who is on their level.

pepe will hopefully alleviate how often laca/auba need to be on the ball trying to be creative, which isn't really their strength. they can focusing sharp movements in the final third while pepe draws attention and feeds passes to them. throw in ceballos making little movements between the lines and you have potential for a dynamic attack

I'd rather we signed Zaha if we can't find another CB. We will need to score more goals to compensate for the inevitable cockups that our error prone defense will turn up with in games we look to be cruising.
