van Dijk is not Maguire though, come on. The martet for defenders has gone mad this summer. £45m for Dunk too. We were talking about him as a cheap option during the season.

Exactly, and it's only because clubs are willing to pay it. There's not a queue of clubs lining up to pay £45m for Dunk or £80m for Zaha. I'm certain you could go to Europe and get similar players for far less money. As soon as idiotic clubs stop falling into the trap the market would level out to something approaching sensible.

We need to have a good season and change the narrative around our club, I suspect our players are considered toxic. Next summer we also need to get in on the great British heist and sell people like Chambers for 40m pounds.

Well, yeah - but that's with the benefit of hindsight. Plus United have been throwing money at their problems only to make things worse for most of this decade now so it's prudent to reserve judgement.

It's prudent, but I do think these signings will strengthen them significantly. They've established a new baseline in their defence that is top 4 quality. It's an expensive baseline, but still a baseline that is a whole tier above ours and probably Chelsea's too. Wan-Bissaka, Maguire and Lindelöf are three defenders I'd like to have. Whether Maguire is as good as Van Dijk is the wrong question to ask. Whether he's better than Smalling is what really matters to United this summer, and he's twice the player.

We go through this same argument every year with United. They spend a shitload on debatable talent, some argue it's great, others argue it's madness, and they ultimately have an average/shit season.

Wan-Bissaka and Maguire are not unknown quantites though. They're amongst the best in their positions in the Premier League and United know what they're getting, even if they've had to pay through the nose for it.

Pogba's future is where their season hinges though.

People said the same about Lukaku, Shaw, Pogba, Sanchez, Falcao etc.

Maybe I'm completely wrong about Maguire, I just don't see anything special there. It's not even about his pricetag.

Pogba, Di Maria, Sanchez were also amongst the best in their position but didn't necessarily go the way they expected. The quality of the player is just one part of adapting to a new club.

Di Maria was definitely a flop. I don't think anyone who supported Arsenal expected Sanchez to be anything else there either. We knew he was washed up. Pogba has been a success for them though, even if he gets a lot of flack. Just look at how important he is. He tops virtually every good midfield statistic. He's at the heart of the little they produce. If they had signed more players closer to his level last summer they wouldn't be in this situation, but instead they signed... Fred.

Not sure about that Klaus, remember when Sanchez joined United there were loads suggesting it was wishful thinking that he wouldn't be a success there. Wasn't a minority either.

Also the point that many always seem to miss when making the 'well they can afford it so it's fine' argument is that while that's true, it ultimately means they're not spending 90m+ on better talent. United can also afford Mbappe and Neymar level talent, or the OMITT favorite Dembele. If they're splashing the cash on the likes of Lukaku and Maquire instead, I'm delighted.

What happened to players with 2 years will sign a new deal or be sold?
