For years the Dems have been preaching how unsafe and rigged our elections have been. Now they are saying what a wonderful job the Trump Administration did in making 2020 the most secure election ever. Actually this is true, except for what the Democrats did. Rigged Election!

😆 . That’s a strange quote. I think the Dems are talking about very different issues. Steps taken by Republicans to restrict voting access. Trump is talking about.. I have no idea what he’s talking about. It’s pure nonsense.

He spent yesterday bigging up right-leaning TV news channels because he’s still butter that Fox had the journalistic integrity to call the election in Joe’s favour. Deeney would classify him under “no cojones!”

I was away (perhaps thankfully) out of mobile range for most of the hubbub both before and after the election, but I think it's kinda interesting that rather than having either no coup, or a clear cut attempt at one, Americans have this Schrödinger's coup going on.

Where it’s worth having perspective is that America is still safe. I have all these American friends who have been talking about needing to leave over the past 2 years. And I think about my travels around Africa over the past few years. Whether it’s Cameroon, Egypt, Tunis’s, Kenya or any other place, you’re constantly on alert because of some political disruption and terror threats. Changing or canceling travel plans because shit is popping off and people are being killed and their lives are in upheaval. So against that, Trump is a clown.

The people that are privileged enough to be able to uproot and leave won't do it because the lifestyle at the top of the income bracket is still very seductive in the US.

I agree, it's all just part of The Trump Show, playing to his devoted viewership.

Trump will ultimately submit to defeat — he will not need to be frogmarched out of the White House on January 20. That much we can be grateful for. But he will never concede defeat; he will never acknowledge Biden’s victory as legitimate.

In the short term, the multiple lawsuits justify Trump’s refusal to concede. But at no point will Trump back off from insisting that he is a victim of the same nefarious “deep state” and “fake news” forces that allegedly have been aligned against him since the moment he took office.

By refusing to concede, he propagates the myth that he is being forced from office precisely because he has kept faith with his base. In defeat, his brand will remain irresistible to his supporters. And if he commands his base, he commands his party — and leaves open the possibility that, like Napoleon returning from his Elba exile, he will run again in 2024.

I definitely agree with the view that Trump's recalcitrance regarding the election result (and his promotion of OANN now that Fox has abandoned him) point to an attempt to parlay his notoriety into a post-office media career backed by a gormless and willing "social movement" of brownshirts, conspiracists and wingnuts.

i don't think it's entirely for show though. yes, all of this can be easily parlayed into a future media grift but if there's any miniscule chance of him over-turning the election, he will push the envelope as far as possible and no institution would be held sacred in that pursuit. he genuinely wants to cheat his way to a second term. it's highly unlikely to eventuate in 2020, but his refusal to accept election results has outed the fact that many right wingers don't view this behaviour as a taboo. 'we're a republic, not a democracy' will be their rallying cry. wouldn't be surprised if this became a regular feature of all right wingers that lose elections in the future
