We are on course for more points and while that is promising the performances don't leave a lot to be admired. We give away as many if not more big chances per game as we have in previous years. This year we've been very lucky, yesterday Utd could/should have scored 2/3 goals against us. You can't ride your luck forever and that has been happening is far too many games this season. During our unbeaten run for example we probably gave away enough chances to lose half of those games

Does buying a keeper who makes good saves make you more lucky than buying a good defender who prevents the chances in the first place?

Yes. I'm loving our fight, hustle and courage this season but it won't get us through tight games forever. We need to invest in more technique and pace.

In particular I take issue with our inaccurate/poorly-weighted passes in and around the oppositions' area. That, and a lack of true, raw pace and power to obliterate defenders.

In life, as in football, you make your own luck. Ultimately it all evens out.

Are we perfect? Certainly not! There are still glaring holes in our game and our defending (and attacking) has room for improvement. It was never going to be smooth sailing in season one of the post Wenger era, I don’t know what sort of romantic fiction some of you guys have apparently been reading. But I will say this, JazzG, if your reaction to yesterday’s big win against Manchester United the form team of the league, just after a disastrous Europa league outing, which has us in 4th place and in control of our own destiny despite a season full of injury and restructuring and wholesale changes, is “blah, performances are bad, blah, we were lucky, blah xG, blah, blah”. I’m sorry but you obviously have an agenda against the manager.

Time will tell if he’s the right manager or not, he needs to get us back into the CL. But I think a few people are still upset Arteta didn’t get the job and are overly critical of Emery because of it.

Given the choice of Emery or Arteta it’s a no brainer.

While I don't agree with Jazz's sentiment, that's a really harsh assessment. What he's saying isn't much different from what was being said earlier on in the season when we went on the unbeaten streak.

we just need to get back to our previous level of CL football. that would be enough to start with IMO

What is the next level? And yes, we certainly do need to attain a higher level of consistency and quality, but you can tell from his track record and our performances in season 1? With all that has been going on with Ozil and Ramsey? And injuries?

For me, even if he does not achieve top 4 this season, I have seen enough in terms of his big game management and ability to motivate players and his philosophy of hard work to give him and the team my support.

Sure, but thing is this is the thread where it is being advocated that it’s time to get behind the manager. And if not after a victory over one of our biggest rivals ever in the midst of their renaissance, then when? If all you’ve got after this win essentially boils down to : oh yeah, so we have a few more points, but it’s the same thing I’ve been saying all season, without considering our position in the league, and how much of a better chance we stand to actually finish in the top 4 when you look at our remaining fixtures vs our competition, (FFS, we can actually catch Tottenham and go ahead of them!), then perhaps the lens through which you are evaluating the manager is too narrow for whatever reason.

Maybe he won't take us to the next level but at the very least he'll be able to make us a regular Champions league side again. Manage that for a couple of seasons and we can re-assess the situation but jumping on the manager merry go round when we've barely created the foundations on which the club will operate on post Wenger is dangerous imo.

It probably has more pattern when you look at our performances against lesser teams on monday night. I think we actually have more wins when we play on monday.

It's the same when we play on saturday 830 big games, we loses that more often than not. We win many more games against United if we play them on sunday as well.

What luck? We've had fuck all luck. Loads of decisions have gone against us, plenty of big injuries too. We got United on their new manager bounce as our first FA cup draw. We had to play City followed by a trip to Stamford Bridge to start the season. We've had no more luck than any of our rivals.
