I'm not a fan: I think he's weak, slow, unathletic; just generally powder-puff. And he's streaky in front of goal and flakey and unreliable generally.

But, I suppose at his age there's a chance he makes a step up, so for that money it wouldn't be a terrible idea to take a punt. He's young enough that there will be re-sale value even if he's the same player in 2 years time.

Carrasco was piss poor in the world cup. Slow and lacked creativity.

He was poor but then he played as a wing back which hes never done in his career.

Sorry to be pedantic but isn't that a bit of a contradiction? If he's better than what we have surely that means he's above our current level...

I think it does make sense if you consider that Clrnc tried to simultaneously shit both on us and the player. Usually the player is below the level of the club or vice versa but that's not enough for us these days.

Bring Back Kerrea Gilbert

We need to sign players that elevate us to get back in the damn CL. I don't want "our level/Europa quality" new players. May as well pack it all up.

I'm not saying Carrasco isn't able to elevate us btw, haven't watched enough of him. I'm just responding to what Clrnc and others were saying really. I would prefer us to sign potentially elite young players rather than total question marks.

At the end of the day not a single player we pick up this summer will have been seriously considered by Liverpool, Manchester City, etc. That's just how it's gonna be from now on. It's an unfortunate fact stemming from the spectacular way we mucked up the ending to the season. We can't compete for the obvious signings.

We all know Carrasco comes with issues, and we all know what they are. We have to start making these bets though, and the only way to get it right is to bet on talent. We need to identify players who are underperforming relative to their talent, along with those who are doing well at midtable clubs and seem ready to take a step up if they get a chance at Arsenal.

I'd be ready to take a punt on Carrasco at around £20 million regardless of whether he fails or not. If he does we just need to cut our losses quickly and try again. We need to try more often and not be so afraid of failure. What we don't need more of is aging never-has-beens like Mkhitaryan or pointless squad fillers like Suarez. Everyone could see from a mile away that they were never going to amount to anything.

Henry Vieira and Bergkamp our three greatest ever players were total question marks. We very rarely ever were in for the most obvious signings but then again we never needed to when Wenger was ahead of the game in the 90s and early 00s.

Get Carrasco in, with his Chinese sabbatical from Simeone's training sessions from hell he should be raring to go. More importantly though we need a new Technical Director in place, I'm not sure Edu fits the bill but even less about Cagigao.

I would say out of those 3 players, Vieria was the only question mark but that was mainly due to his age and lack of game time at Milan. The fact he was signed for Milan (in their pomp) at such a young age would suggest he had something about him. In relation to the others, Henry was a World Cup winner and one if the hottest talents coming out of France in decades (think of Martial of the mid 90s). Similar to Vieria, he was signed by arguably the GOAT Juve side (I appreciate he wasn’t amazing there).

Don’t get me started on Bergkamp, he was a genius even before he joined us. I know he flopped at Inter but he was another level at Ajax and played for Holand in Euro 92 and USA 94 respectively. These were no Carassaco esque players.

Bergkamp was great for Ajax but flopped badly at Inter. Same with Henry at Juve where he played on the wing

I didn't say they were Carrasco level of players, I said they were major gambles. They weren't nearly as coveted as they were earlier in their careers

It's the kind of risk we can and should take, I feel. Might flop, move him on. It's not impossible if you've got the right mindset from the beginning. That means not overly investing in an individual players' success and clinging to them season after season.
