Emery needs two seasons to have a reasonable chance of taking the club forward. Anyone who expects significant and sustained improvements in a shorter timeframe is simply being unrealistic and unreasonable.

And again the timeframes are also dependant upon our transfer activity & strategy. As such it is likely to take longer if we are going to focus more on the likes of Torreira and Guendouzi in terms of age, as they lack experience and are still developing their game.

Again the players were more used to playing within a system and were better developed, let alone they were used to there being consequences if they didn't play as required, let alone simply not being good enough.
Further to this Klopp's major impact to their style of play was the introduction of his gengen-press, but BR already had them playing on the counter with pace and numbers.

we've been hugely inconsistent.

fulham away, we were unreal and scored the team goal of the season. tottenscum at home, we played an amazing half of football and should have won 4 or 5 nil if not for comically bad refereeing decisions. in the chelsea match, we played 30-40 minutes of amazing football. liverpool at home, we were the better team for almost the entire match. we comfortably beat everton at home and played good football. we played a blistering game against leicester, who just beat man city.

we've also turned in some dodgy performances against lesser teams, either dropping points (southampton) or barely winning.

guardiola inherited a bunch of players at citeh in his first season that are long gone now, replaced by better players: yaya toure, sagna, fernando, kolarov, jesus navas, clichy, etc. he obviously spent a fortune on the squad after he arrived, but in that first season, they were pedestrian for long stretches, and i remember articles being written asking if he was in over his head in the premier league. they finished 3rd with 78 points, 15 points off chelsea, who comfortably won the league. in that first season, they started strong, winning 6 straight, then lost to spuds, back to back draws with everton and southampton, dropped points to boro, lost to chelsea and leicester, and lost to liverpool on NYE. they finished their first 19 games with a record of 12 wins, 4 losses and 3 draws for 39 points. in emery's first 19 games, we have 11 wins, 3 losses and 5 draws for 38 points.

i think emery deserves the rest of this season, a big summer transfer window where he can clear out the players who dont fit, get investment into the squad, and then see where next season takes us.

IMO the only way we get investment into the squad is via additional revenues raised via player sales, which is unlikely to happen in the short term as our primary focus initially is all about reducing the wage budget.

Because of our mismanagement in terms of wages and contracts we do not have a lot of players who appear likely to raise significant revenues - unlike Suarez or Coutinho who essentially bankrolled LFC's ability to improve their squad. Our reality is that we are likely to be losing money on our top earners and more experienced players as already seen re Wilshere, and as appears to likely be the case re Rambo and Welbeck this season.
The other point being that we have tended to sell and then not reinvest directly into the team and to replace with cheaper developing options so we effectively lower the standard until / unless those players come good. We are likely to continue this strategy at least in the short term until we can get our operating costs / wages to a more realistic level.

Emery has done ok, but the squad is simply awful. Both Chelsea and Man U are better than us on paper. Top four would be a terrific achievement.

I'm perplexed why we've switched formations yet again, but I'll cut Emery some slack on that, he's feeling it out. I think he really intends to use the whole season as a transitionary experiment.

There was talk that the 'honeymoon is over' on the match thread - regardless that, the marriage should be at least be two years. He got to be given a go.

IMO we need to hang tough so as to be able to take advantage of any opportunities when the CL fixtures claim priority, and we also need to be mindful that CFC will be looking to do much the same.

EDIT - in terms of our recent form IMO the key factor regarding our drop in performance has been the absence of Xhaka / the playmaker in midfield.

Theres no set amount of time a manager needs. When they're done at a club it's time to move on. If things just got slowly worse all season it'd be time for someone else.

IMO as an immediate indicator of the team that is significant, particularly when you also factor in that at the start of the season there have only been 2 new players clearly establish themselves in the starting XI = Leno and Torreira, with Sokratis as a possible 3rd.

The most disappointing result so far probably is the Southampton one. I don't know what is with us and St Mary's but this is probably the 3rd or 4th time we lost to them in their worst run of results.

We threw away the second half of last season in favour of the cups though.

Apparently the comparison against AW's last 19 games in all comps shows a 33% improvement or thereabouts.

Not sure I agree with the article entirely, particularly as it seems to dismiss the profound impact on team selections and shape that Welbeck's injury has had - IMO it has been as significant as the combined effects of the injuries in defence because we have no cover.
IMO the only reason the defensive situation gets the focus is that it has detracted from our midfield in having Xhaka cover at CB & LB.

Welbeck has been a bit-part player at best who has spent most of his time with us injured.
He is a striker and his fielding would mean less Auba or Laca.
Not sure how that would have helped the Laca's situation or the multiple muscle injuries at the back.

Simply means that in terms of resources we have cover re injuries / non-PL games and can afford to start both PEA and Laca together in the PL games.
Also means that Welbeck can come off the bench into a wide role in terms of formation options.

I'm not sure I see how keeping one of them on the bench is much different from playing both at the same time from an injury perspective. If one of them gets injured you've still got one left.
