That's my favorite example of why this shouldn't be given much weight. Messi has lost several finals, Portugal won one without Ronaldo playing (after 17 minutes) and it's used as an example of Ronaldo's success for the national team. By applying this to Messi, if he didn't play those finals and Argentina won, then he'd have a better claim on the "best player of all time" than he does now. That doesn't make sense to me.
Because Ronaldo guided them to that victory. It wasn’t simply about ability on the field but he was acting like the coach and mentally getting them over the line. Being a GOAT is also about personality. Maradona had it, Ronaldo has got it to certain extent, not sure about Messi.
